I am the host of the NORML SHOW LIVE and The NORML Stash Blog. I'm married, live in Portland, Oregon, and I am a registered medical marijuana caregiver in this state. I've worked days as an IT geek and nights as a professional musician. Previously, I have been the host of my own political talk radio show on satellite radio. I've been the High Times "Freedom Fighter of the Month" for my work producing Oregon NORML's TV show, "A Cannabis Community Forum", and for helping to institute Portland's wildly successful medical marijuana cardholders meetings, where we help sick and disabled Oregonians acquire cannabis plant starts, learn gardening, and understand the medical marijuana law. I've dedicated my life to bringing an end to adult marijuana prohibition and re-legalizing cannabis hemp, and I'm honored to be chosen by NORML to be our daily voice.

Go Phelps. I smoke weed and play tennis. Weed has never effected my game. If the anti-drug sports industry wants to be clean, they should take out all the alcohol commercials running the airwaves. I think Phelps as an advocate for marijuana is far better than sponsoring hella sweetened cereal for children. I would rather smoke weed after working out than take some opiate-based muscle relaxant that will turn me into an addict.

    It’s not exactly like it’s a performance enhancing drug…

If Michael Phelps(8 olympic medal winner)can smoke pot and still be the best swimmer in the world, marijuana oviously is not as “dangerous” as its played to be. Marijuana is safer than using tobacco, and other substances like alcohol. America needs to legalize marijuana. long live maryjane.

I don’t know if Michael is, in any way, aware of the far-reaching consequences of the position he takes.
If any body, I mean any body, have the power and the necessary number of followers to make politicians reverse the unjust marijuana laws, that person would be Michael Phelps.
He has in front of him two ways to go, the one he has already started, apologizing for having smoked pot or, on the contrary, to tell the world what he really feels and let all of those aging, alcohol drinking and tobacco smoking, politicians to know that what he does, is a hundred times healthier than what they do.
I’m writing with the hope that, some how, some body that reads this, may have the possibility to plant this idea into Michael’s head, just in case he has not thought of it and he is brave enough to trade hundreds of millions of dollars for the position of “defender of a just cause”.
I bet he could take us to victory! Fight Michael, fight! We support you!

I play College baseball and i smoke everyday and i’m still a beast. If he can win 8 gold medals and he chooses to rip a bong who cares. If anything smoking bud would make him worse don’t you think???? Giving HIMSELF not his competitors an unfair advantage, but obviously it doesn’t trouble the best swimmer, maybe even the most dominant athlete in the world. LEGALIZE IT!!

I’m a swimmer as well, on international level. and I have also smoked weed in the past.. It’s not a big deal, he’s just having fun after the olympics.
When are these anti-drug sport agencies learn that they have no authority to tell someone how to live his life..
Doping shouldn’t be allowed in sports, for a fair competition. but smoking some weed when partying is’t a big deal…

alright so, he owns everyone in the world at swimming and he smokes pot. So the words out, pot does not impede people, actually, marijuana expands the longs. hopefully this will turn out well and get peoples heads out of their asses.

All I can say is that they should stick to their guns (their regulations). Look at the Eric Lamaze/Olympics indcident. Granted, Lamaze tested positive for traces of Heroin and banned cold medication, but he was banned from TWO Olympics, and came back clean, and stronger than ever to win Canada’s first Olympic Gold in Equestrian in Beijing. If they’re going to put one athelete through that, then they should enforce it for all. An illegal drug is an illegal drug. Howevever, what are they going to do about it now? Phelps wasn’t partaking in Marijuana during an Olympic season, and therefore won’t test positive for it come 2012 (or at least, you would hope not after this…). If he keeps up his “leisurely” activities and DOES end up testing positive for competitions, he should be suspended like any other athelete who has gone through the humiliation.

I can’t believe he would do that!! I though he was better than that!!! I used to love him…..but now I dont! I am sooo heartbroken because of this…..

  12. papilunas

Cretinics! hipocriticals! Are you going to crucify for smoking pot? This system really sucks! When, if ever, are you going to, either, legalize marihuana or to outlaw tobacco and alcohol?

  13. bob

    Don’t smoke around anyone with a camera….

my bad RR, I was just a thought Phelps needed a little theme music. Yes, I hope he doesn’t go to the “I made a mistake” card.

  15. Heavy Kevy

I wonder if he was smoking Columbian “Gold”?

  16. MrSpof

Of course he looked as natural with the bong as he does in the pool. The only reason herb is a big deal is because it’s illegal. Funny as hell how many high profile people are/were kind smokers. Betcha Michael can suck the screen right down the bowl with his lung capacity.

  17. bemky

i hope noone tries to tell michael that hes setting a bad example of smoking pot. because i think hes holding that bong the proper way. i cant wait to rub this in peoples faces
