While I am supportive of a patient’s right to pursue all legally available options for medical treatment, I therefore am opposed to any effort legalizing the use of marijuana. [Seriously... a U.S. Senator constructed that sentence in official correspondence! -- "R"R]

While I believe that the use of Marijuana for medical purposes can be an effective treatment option for certain ailments, legalizing a controlled substance could pose certain law enforcement and regulatory problems that would affect the public benefit of this legalization.

My concern is with the abuse of the use of “medical” marijuana which has happened in states like California, where pot is being prescribed for “insomnia” and “anxiety”. We have serious problems caused by drug use in this nation, and I don’t want to do anything that will exacerbate that situation.

While I personally oppose legalizing marijuana, I have been supportive in the past of the rights of states, like Washington, to determine what course of action they choose on this difficult issue.

While many people have voiced their opinion that marijuana is a “safe drug” that should be legalized and regulated as an economic band-aid, I strongly disagree. I believe that use of marijuana can result in dire consequences and that while we must rebuild the core of our economy, we should do so in a manner that does not put millions of Americans in harm’s way.

I am aware of the historical use of hemp since it was widely grown as an agricultural crop from colonial times through the mid-1800′s for fabrics, twine, and paper. As you know, it is currently legal to possess imported sterilized hemp seeds, hemp products (such as fabrics and hemp oil cosmetics) and raw hemp fiber, because these products are not included in the most restrictive category of controlled substances.

My fellow toker, while it is important to consider the words we use, don’t let political correctness blind you from the richness of language we have to get our message across. There is a context for every description of cannabis and its users and used correctly they can better express our views to a broader audience. Let us butcher ol’ Bill Shakespeare and remember: “What’s in a name? That which we call cannabis – By any other name would toke as sweet.”
