The best basketball player on the Washington State Cougars and leading scorer in the PAC-10 has been arrested for marijuana possession. Add one more exceptional athlete to the ranks of marijuana users.

Salem police arrested Henry Guist after a SWAT raid located stolen property and a medical marijuana grow. KATU reports that “Guist is an Oregon Medical Marijuana Program card holder but police said he was operating well outside the program restrictions.”

There is no denying the medical benefit to socialization, especially for patients who are so often battling the depression that naturally arises from fighting for one’s health. Many patients have been ostracized from other social groups for one reason or another. Just being a cannabis user can subject the patient to work and housing sanctions and demonization from church and other social leaders. Sometimes the cannabis club is the only social experience these patients have.

A 38-year-old man who was able to talk his way out of being killed after stealing marijuana from a Mexican drug gang has been found beheaded and brutally mutilated at his suburban Phoenix apartment.

During a joint news conference at the White House, Obama praised Calderon for his “extraordinary courage” in fighting the violent drug cartels that have been responsible for deaths on both sides of the border. Obama pledged to speed up U.S. aid to train and equip Mexican forces to help in those efforts, but he also acknowledged that the U.S. must stem the flow of cash and guns to Mexico that have aided the cartels.

Washington senators moved forward Wednesday night with establishing more regulation on the state’s medical marijuana system, approving a bill with changes that would give patients greater protection from arrest and bring the supply chain out of a legal gray area.
