Seventy-nine percent (79%) of U.S. voters now say the military should be used along the border with Mexico to protect American citizens if drug-related violence continues to grow in that area.
This marks a 21-point jump in support for the use of the U.S. military along the border in just two months.
Only 10% now say the military should not be used in that fashion, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Eleven percent (11%) are not sure.

Absolutely not. If you feel you must deploy troops on the southern border, recall selected deployed units of the National Guard from Iraq and Afghanistan. Then get Congress to approve for a limited time these selected units of the National Guard to secure the border. Our military serve outside our borders for reasons that should be abundantly clear. I say ‘abundantly clear’ but based on the statistics posted above, let me spell it out.
First, I love our military make no mistakes about that. They go to interesting places, meet fascinating people, and kill them so I can sit here all cozy and complain about marijuana law reform. Considering killing is a skill our military is pretty darned good at, don’t you think it’s best they operate outside our borders?
Wait, just legalize marijuana. I’m pretty sure our existing border control could handle drug cartels that just lost 60-70% of their bottom line. Another thought: stop letting guns flow south from our country to Mexico. There’s no need for new gun laws; enforce the ones we have. We already have the tools to fight the cartels. Tell the politicians to use them!
[And as a former member of your military, let me tell you that most of the military don't want to be deployed inside America, either. There's a reason we have the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. Despite the erosion of this sacred principle that we maintain separation of powers and checks and balances (our military fights our enemies vs. our police enforce our laws), and whether the idea of marshaling forces on our southern border to protect us from our own demand for drugs and love of guns is technically legal, I'm telling you, it is a bad idea. Those forces, once placed on the border, will become very difficult to remove, even if we eliminate the Mexican drug war. If they succeed at reducing violence, the justification will be that they need to stay there to keep violence down. If they do not succeed, the justification will be that the violence is so bad they must stay. I'm no Cassandra; I'm just reading past headlines circa 2004-2008 in Iraq. -- "R"R]
