An 80-year-old woman caught with a half pound of marijuana, digital scales and a wad of cash pleaded guilty Wednesday.
On Sept. 17, narcotics agents searching Ms. Wilsey’s south Augusta home found dozens of plastic bags of marijuana, said Assistant District Attorney John Markwalter.
Ms. Wilsey admitted selling marijuana, Mr. Markwalter said. She led officers to the marijuana, scales and $3,825.
Defense attorney Tanya Jeffords told the judge that Ms. Wilsey had suffered headaches for years without getting relief from prescription medication. About a year ago, someone suggested she try marijuana, Ms. Jeffords said. It worked without the side effects of prescription drugs, and the selling evolved gradually, Ms. Jeffords said. The widow’s only income is from Social Security and a small pension.
Judge Annis said he could sympathize with someone using marijuana for medical reasons, but there was no excuse for dealing it. Ms. Wilsey apologized and promised never to enter a courtroom again.
Judge Annis sentenced Ms. Wilsey to five years’ probation for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. In lieu of a fine, he ordered her to perform 230 hours of community service.

Well, Ms. Wilsey, if you work full-time for about a month and a half you can work off that community service. Should be no problem for an 80-year-old widow on Social Security. And if you make it to age 85, you won’t even be on probation anymore, you dangerous criminal drug dealer, you!
What I want to know is to whom she was selling the marijuana? How do you end up finding “a guy” who turns out to be an 80-year-old woman? I’m guessing she was probably selling to other people well into their adulthood, who may also have been using marijuana for medicinal purposes. I think by the time you reach a certain age, all marijuana use is medicinal. Just judging by the frequency of over-the-counter analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant medications advertised to senior citizens on TV every day, it looks like old age itself is a condition treatable by marijuana.

I agree Russ! It’s right up there with it’s ok to give away sex, but don’t you make someone pay for it. Too many double standards.
I completely with you so long as everyone is allowed to trade dollars for apples. Where I have a problem is when 90% of the people aren’t allowed to have apples, 10% are allowed to have apples, but only with a doctors’ recommendation in thirteen states, and then only those in two states are allowed to trade dollars for apples, but since apples are illegal for everyone else who wants them, the apple sellers in those two states are charging $45 per apple.
I’m a big foe of this “using-is-okay-but-selling-is-evil” position.
If I want dollars and I have apples, and someone else has dollars and wants apples, then he gives me a buck and I give him an apple. We’re both better off.
And that, my friends, is how the human race lifted itself out of the utter poverty that had us living like beasts for millenia. (Unfortunately, too many humans are stuck in places where there is not enough value-producing trade.)
Everyone knows that marijuana is harmless when used responsibly. It’s also relaxing, fun, and stimulating. An innocent treat. A way to partake of transcendent joy.
And selling something that’s harmless–exchanging cash for a bit of produce–is no more evil than marijuana itself.
The main focus of our marijuana policy should be keeping it out of kids’ hands.
