From Facebook: Born in San Antonio, Texas Chuuwee has been rapping for eight years. Influenced by his mother and many great mc’s like Jay-z, Outkast, UGK, and more Chuuwee blends the borders of underground, back pack hip hop and mainstream rap. During the first years of his career people tried discouraging him by saying music wasn’t for him. Negativity hasn’t slowed him a bit, doing shows opening for Mistah Fab, Rakim and Rymefest in Los Angeles, California if only fueling his fire. Chuuwee is becoming a well-known talent throughout Northern California.

Groovin’/Rockin’ Thursday: Midnight to Twelve – “Rhyme or Reason”

Midnight to Twelve was part of the first show I got to promote on air as an actual radio DJ. As small as it seems, it was one of the coolest things ever. Its the small things we remember right! Anyway, these guys are not only one of the best rock bands I’ve had a chance to see live they are also a great group of guys. We say that a lot but honestly its easy to say with these guys. Not a big group of tokers. But, its all about the music.

From Los Angeles, California the band got a big kick when their tune ‘Slam’ was highlighted on the teen bop show ‘One Tree Hill’. From that point they started to get radio play and just like any other band wanting to make it, they started to tour continuously. I got to bring these guys into the town I was in a few times and every time I was reminded what it was like to be a musician in a band because these guys really represented that brotherhood that it can be.

Many tunes to choose from that are hits of their album ‘XII’. This one I selected is called ‘Rhyme or Reason’. Groovin’ Thursday: Wiz Khalifa – “Young Boy Fresh”

Wiz Khalifa, ‘aka’ Cameron Thomaz is one of the hottest hip-hop/rap stars on the market now. The song Black and Yellow, which is a reference to his home City of Pittsburgh has made it to stations all over the United States and beyond, and combined with news on his recent arrest on a tour bus in South Carolina for possession of marijuana Wiz is becoming a household name.

His tunes are mostly released on mixtape and a wide selection is available for free online to download including one of his first and hottest mixtapes ‘Grow Season‘. I highly suggest you pick that up if your a fan of anything of his. In fact that mixtape in my opinion is better than anything in collection hes released yet. This tune is off it, called ‘Young Boy Fresh’.

Groovin’ Thursday: Slightly Stoopid – No Cocaine (Remix ft. Capleton)

Slightly Stoopid, who are another one of our favorite toker groups appear on the album Hi Grade Ganja Anthems 3 released recently on Greensleeves Records. Slightly Stoopid’s “No Cocaine” plus the “No Cocaine” remix featuring Reggae legend Capleton, appear on the digital version of the album, as well as tracks by Barrington Levy, Eek-A-Mouse, Sizzla, Collie Buddz, and more. I got the chance to hang with Miles and the crew from Slightly Stoopid at The Mile High Music Festival this year. I’m sure the scene is the same for the group everywhere they go. They set up shop, make sure a few entertaining games are in place such as a bean bag toss, and a show like the one we were at a BBQ is a must. Surrounded by friends and family the group enjoys the life they live to the fullest and it shows around them. They have fun. Enjoying Cannabis is also another pleasure of the group, of course. This was all too evident by the introduction of members to my co-host Derek and I inside a clambaked tour bus. Just one or two joints aren’t gonna quite cut it for a job like that. You might begin to get the picture…

Groovin’ Thursday: Cypress Hill – Get It Anyway

One of my favorite songs has become “Get It Anyway” from Cypress Hill because of the message of the song. A large part of Cypress Hills latest album ‘Rise Up’ consists of positive messages of rising up and overcoming the larger obstacles in front of us. Of course an album from Cypress Hill also contains that west coast gangster touch that marinates in a cloud of Kush smoke.

Cypress Hill has continued to be on the front line of Cannabis awareness and supporting opportunities of change. Recently, as many stashers know they hosted the Smokeout Festival where the first sanctioned area for medical Cannabis use at a concert was established.

I also chose this particular song this week because no matter what happened this week with Cannabis initiatives at the ballot, We Get It Anyway. We know we have won the war and we know we are on the right side of history. Its been echoed that its not a matter of ‘If’ anymore but a matter of when. This couldn’t be more true to the situation at hand, and you should hold your head up high knowing you are part of a movement in this nation that will one day have the possibility to not only change our laws, but also change the entire fabric of what our country is made up of. Keep fighting, and showing up to rallies and talking to your representatives. With you we will succeed, and we will ‘Get It Anyway’.

Groovin’ Thursday: Devin the Dude – “What We Be On”

Devin the Dude is no stranger to Cannabis users and Cannabis is no stranger to Devin the Dude. Almost all his cuts of music are about tokin on the fine green and if they aren’t directly related to Marijuana they certainly involve him sparking a joint somewhere in the process. His last three album titles have been Waitn’ to Inhale, Landing Gear, and Suite 420. No question his devotion.

Even putting aside all the great references to Cannabis you’re still left with a more chilled and relaxed rapper and hip-hop artist. While other rappers boast at being the hypest or the crunkest Devin the Dude, ‘aka’ Devin Copeland is more fit and satisfied for the laid back style and reference to life. Not to say he doesn’t cover the more serious topics in tunes. Living life and rougher times and coming out of Houston its surprising his style turned out as such. But, all more for us to enjoy as stoners.

The tune ‘What We Be On‘ is off Devin the Dudes last album titled ‘Suite 420′. Also if you enjoy great hip-hop, especially with a slight funky twist make sure you look into more of his music if you haven’t already.

Groovin’ Thursday: Splinta – Let There Be Sound

Splinta is a just a surf bum with a habit of making songs for the beach. Non-rap name is Chad Campbell hailing from the Big Island of Hawaii. Chad started making music with Arena Productions a while back. And, after he made a successful mixtape called “Kona Mash”, Pepper, who is with a label called Law Records was kind enough to produce and distribute the first Splinta record named “Aftaparty”. Since then Chad has continued to make beach rap as a solo artist, adding 4 more albums to his catalog. Melding conscious lyrics, organic beats, and Hawaii’s vibe. Splinta says he makes music for beach people and land lubbers alike.

You can find a lot of his music online for free, and on the Splinta Facebook page. I got this tune off the Law Records Summer Sampler CD and you can sign up with Law Records also to get free stuff too. A great artist if youre looking for something a little lighter on the rap and hip-hop side, but still has the talent and gusto to roll with some of the genres best.

Groovin’ Thursday: 1st Place – “Saggin Remix”

1st Place - "Saggin' (featuring Potluck)"

I first heard of 1st Place on a radio show called ‘Scratch and Sniff‘. Its a show where they remix tunes into each other. Like an AC/DC tune into a Ludacris jam. And so on. 1st Place is one of the unsigned acts they play and also one of their favorites to throw on too it seems. Ive dug everything I’ve heard from these guys and last week when I heard this one on the radio I had to get it from the guys.

The song features Potluck, an act many of us are familiar with and dig. Potluck is signed to the Kottonmouth Kings label Subnoize Records. As I mentioned before 1st Place has been on a syndicated mixtape show quite a few times and one of the DJ’s of that show, DJ Mike Czech has teamed with 1st Place to release a mix tape. You can get it on their Myspace. Just look for “The Great Boombox” mixtape. It includes the previous tune I’ve played on NORML Show Live from 1st Place “Being Broke Sucks”. Yes it does.

Groovin’ Thursday: Kornbred – “Struggle”

Travelle Wiggins ‘aka’ Kornbred has had a tough life. No money and bad neighborhoods throughout childhood left him wanting more. His hardships increased at the age of 16 when he had to turn to “The Covenant House” homeless shelter where he would spend the next two years bouncing in and out of. At the age of 19 he lost his mother and decided to try and start everything all over. He moved to Albany, Georgia and enrolled in Turner Job Corps where he achieved his GED then went on to master ‘Culinary Arts’. He then moved back to Florida and started with music.

Growing up Travelle’s musical influence was R&B, and he says he was never a connoisseur of Rap music, though he realized soon rapping came easy. One of the best original artists I’ve had the pleasure to bring y’all on NORML Show Live. Kornbred with Struggle.

Groovin’ Thursday: Goose – “Off the Pot”

Goose. Not much is know about this artist. Is he white, or is he black? Does he come from the ghetto or five star digs? One thing I do know about ‘Goose’ is that his music is second to none. I’ll admit I’ve had conversations with this artist before. We cant highlight someone as much as we do on John Doe Radio and have one of his tunes as our theme songs, “No Seeds“, and still not know the guy at all. but, im not spilling the beans, because this is the way Goose likes it. A friend of reform and an artist deep down you can certainly expect the best from him. Goose has also won a “Best Male Artist” and “Best Hip Hop Song” from the Marijuana Music Awards for his tune “Cali”. You’ve heard “Cali” and No Seeds” on NORML LIVE and now you get to hear “Off the Pot”.

You can pick up a copy of your own album from Goose by heading to CD Baby or iTunes. Search for ‘The Saltmine Sessions’ and you’ve got money in the bank with this artist. Goose is the best artist I have ever heard that is not signed to an label. Something tells me good enough promotion on his own and he wouldnt need any label. The music speaks for itself.
