I am the producer of The NORML Network, the host of the NORML SHOW LIVE and The NORML Stash Blog, and NORML's Outreach Coordinator. I'm married, live in Portland, Oregon, and I am a registered medical marijuana caregiver in this state. I've worked days as an IT geek and nights as a professional musician. Previously, I have been the host of my own political talk radio show on satellite radio. I've been the High Times "Freedom Fighter of the Month" and I travel across the country to educate people on marijuana reform. I've dedicated my life to bringing an end to adult marijuana prohibition and re-legalizing cannabis hemp, and I'm honored to be chosen by NORML to give voice to the Marijuana Nation and to speak for those who can't speak up.

    he was joking anyway

I think we see the same thing. We see religion as a potential obstacle to reform. Some want to eliminate religion, and some want to reconcile it. I guess I just think that reconciliation is the one of the keys to cannabis reform in TN. They need to know that mj reformers are not their enemy, and of course, we’re not. If that can be done, and you’re right, we’ll never reach some of the triple-chinned-head-in-sand types, but if it can be done, well, that’s the fast track to mj reform in TN. I’m not talking about being a revisionist and re-interpreting the Bible… I’m talking about using the facts and applying it to the best of their religious ideals. It’s a motes-in-eyes kind of thing. It’s a “do unto others” thing.

You’re right, though. The issues aren’t different at all, unless you’re in the collective mind of Tennessee people.

BUT… I digress… Brad Pitt is circling the wagons to paint a good self image. Apparently, he gave up marijuana for hash. hahaha! obfuscator.

  3. ChrisfromTN

That’s why it has to come from within. People have to come by whatever realization on their own.

I said they’re doing what’s best for their children, but I think you’ll agree that the problem comes when they want to do what’s best for OUR children. That’s not just from religious types.. that’s from idealogues from all sides.

  4. ChrisfromTN

You’re right. They believe what they believe, and you’ll do no good if you try to convince them otherwise. They often forget that Christians lead better by example than they do by force. Christians are good people trying to do what they think is right for their children.

Personally, I’d be thankful that some of these people are Christians, because if they weren’t, there would still be a bunch of drunks with guns and ammo and geographic isolation.

…or maybe brad Pitt’s announcing he quit to keep ass holes like the douches that locked up cheech (or was it chong) from tAking his kids. all it takes is one douche on a “moral” mission to ruin a whole family’s life. whether or not he quit, I respect that he puts his family first.

  6. aphoric

Sounds kinda like a fear of the kids snitching to me

  7. Bear Bait

You can’t reach those people, it’s a waste of time, If they aren’t going to use reason, it’s like arguing with a moron.

  8. ChrisfromTN

    Try telling them that…

Look… as far as the religion thing goes, sure, its OK for somebody to be an athiest in TN, but Tennessee people will ignore anybody running around shouting, “There is no God, and we should legalize weed.” They have a right to do that.

As far as the gay marriage thing goes, if we live in a democracy, and the States’ rights to have medical mj laws are a state by state issue, we have to be willing to accept that some states simply won’t sign on to the mj issue, just like some won’t adopt gay marriage. I just think mj has a better chance if we separate it from other controversial issues.

All I’m saying is that if we’re going to work together, the crazy people from the left will have to find some common ground with the crazy people on the right. We gather here to advocate for marijuana reform. Surely there are less controversial examples of law reform to use to compare the mj issue. Women’s suffrage? Black suffrage? Those issues are no-brainers now… even in Tennessee, bud.

I know you guys don’t like to hear it, but I’m trying to be helpful. I totally support your right to advocate for reform in whatever way you see fit. I just don’t see balling the 3 messages up at one time and saying, “see? if you believe A then you are also bound to believe B and C.” being particularly effective around here.

Apparently, quite a large percentage of the population in Tennessee is against gay marriage… at least according to the last vote we took. That’s democracy for you. Mob rule. Even if it doesn’t make sense, it is the peoples’ will. What we want is a law in the republic to protect us against the mob, which brings us to where we are today… trying to figure out the best way to reach out to people and maybe even change a few minds, which is a bit presumptous in itself, but hey, we have an agenda.

  9. Bear Bait

how is banning gay marriage different than banning cannabis use. When conservatives say they want the gov. out of their business they mean unless it has to do with something they feel is moraly wrong. If they want to believe in a mythical creature thats fine but to force their beliefs on others has long past it’s time.

  10. ChrisfromTN

no. these are good people. they are friends and family, and they just want to do what is right.

  11. Bear Bait

your not going to convince inbred morons of anything anyway

  12. ChrisfromTN

OK. Brad Pitt. He is welcome to run on whatever platform he wants to run on, but here it is again… somebody combining the marijuana issue with anti-religious/pro homosexual views. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that unless you understand how the folks around here (TN) think. If its all wrapped up into one big ball, they’ll just throw the whole thing out. If it is viewed as an issue that only gay athiests support, we’ll get crowds alright, full of children bearing crosses draped in American Flags.

But in the South, cannabis and the Bible need to be reconciled. It needs to be a conservative repudiation of federal government intrusion, and it needs to be God’s gift to us, whether you believe that He is alive or that he is simply math. Let’s face it: some people just want to be left alone. It needs to be seen as an unholy act to prevent people from using it or possessing, because it is… and that’s whether you believe in God or not. When you get folks willing to stand up and say “kill all religion and legalize the weed!” well… that, my friends, will simply not fly down here. You can say what you want to, but Mr. Pitt didn’t do us any favors. I don’t expect him to, either, he doesn’t owe us anything.

an i didn’t like when he said that he would stand no chance, if he would run for office.
For one because he made it sound that people that are running for office will not stand a chance for runnig for office. But you know on the other hand, I would have voted for him, if he would have run for office. I believe a lot of ppl in the USA would!

  14. vladimir

Yeah he kinda put us a lil down. An what the fuck how can be bored when you are in LA in your tight ass apartments with a hot ass chick, smoking a bong. I mean WTF this guy thinks he got to good. An maybe he was like I could have 20 hos and bitches up in my hizzle than just “ONE” right? I mean if thats the case, he should have add that in to his sentence, but then again he would come out like a player, pervert, or cocky?

An you know I didnt like what he said about being bored when you smoke. It is actually the apposite of it, it makes the boring more fun.

  15. norml.lee

The problems with smoking pot and having a child are mostly socialistic stigmas. Sure people will be bad parents and let pot be more important than their own children, but the same applies with anything else. Booze, video games, tv… You name it! Most parents I know who wouldn’t smoke because they have kids, don’t smoke because they just don’t have time any more or because they’re afraid of child protective (more like stealing) services taking their children away. At the end of the day, this is a personal choice issue. One that in a truly free society we wouldn’t have to be arguing about because no one would be going to jail for making that choice.

  16. MrSpof

Yeah, the whole “I’m a Dad now” things smacks of “I must put away childish things …”.

But what if it’s not childish? Would it be better if I got drunk daily with all the negative health results and higher incidences of domestic abuse?

I use pot, among other reasons, for the same reasons others use prescription mood elavators/inhibitors: I’m a much more even keeled adult, husband, and father when I’m not strung as tight as a piano wire. There’s also the whole alcoholic gene i.e. predisposition for chemical dependence in my family. My father died a drunk of cirrhosis of the liver at my age: 44. Am I wrong or a poor parent for choosing a non-toxic safer alternative than alcohol?

I don’t think so and, as with all my adult decisions, I’ll live with the consequences of my actions.

  17. WakeUpDead

EYh, I think he still tokes buthas to set a good picture because all those kids they are adopting! I am a father of 4 have been a fatehr for 15 years now, I have to say I get mad when someone says smoking makes you a bad dad. I use medicaly and without it Im basicly bed ridden so tell me that being bed ridden is better parenting than out playing and supervising my kids, even if Im medicated!

On top of that even if I wasnt medicating I would rather be happy and free spirited with my kids than grumpy and stressed!

If anything those kids would rather their mother and father stopped bring home more kids then they care if he smokes pot or not!

Im glad Brad is sup[porting our cause and saying Prohibition is wrong, but he kinda put us down when making that remark, we are fighting for the responcible use of adult cannabis use, kids or no kids, right?

  18. Bear Bait

:2thumbs: to Brad for quitting something that made him isolated and bored :pissed: that he threw in “i’m a dad now” bullshit.

  19. Drew

…maybe he recently gave it up, because Quentin Tarentino was on The Howard Stern show yesterday saying what great hash Brad PItt gave him and shared with him. He said he cut a chunk off and gave it to him, and that he didn’t have a pipe… supposedly Brad gave him a can of coke.. the old can of coke pipe trick ;) He said they smoked really good hash in France after the kids were in bed… I bet the audio is out there…
