Melbourne, Australia: The country’s major sporting organization, the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports, an entity that oversees cricket, soccer, Australian Rules football, rugby, and tennis, has decided to remove cannabis from the long list of performance-enhancing drugs.

Cannabis became “mari-huana,” uniting the name of Mary, the mother of Jesus, with an indigenous word for “property” or “stuff” — huana. The Spanish’s cannabis became the natives’ “Mary’s stuff,” or “Mary’s weed,” Campos theorizes, but no one truly knows.

The California State Athletic Commission voted on Monday to approve an amendment that allows therapeutic use exemptions (TUE) for combat sports’ athletes who use drugs currently banned by the state agency for medical purposes, including testosterone and marijuana.

After two long-running wars with escalating levels of combat stress, more than 110,000 active-duty Army troops last year were taking prescribed antidepressants, narcotics, sedatives, antipsychotics and anti-anxiety drugs, according to figures recently disclosed to The Times by the U.S. Army surgeon general. Nearly 8% of the active-duty Army is now on sedatives and more than 6% is on antidepressants — an eightfold increase since 2005.
