If your strategy to legalize the use of plant cannabis by all people for any reason is to preach “All use is medical/wellness”, cannabinoid pharmaceuticals is where you’ll end up. There exists a paradigm for the medical / wellness use of substances, and it lies in the realm of doctors and pharmacists and prescriptions and manufactured drugs. However, there also exists a paradigm for the recreational use of substances, and it lies in the realm of taverns and bartenders and DUI laws and ID checks and home brewing.

So given four Americans, we’re likely to find two who think marijuana use ought to be legalized (or at most ticketed), one who thinks use ought to be ticketed and fined, and one who thinks use ought to lead to prison.

But it’s not always fancy Corvettes and new SUVs that the police departments are buying, like Georgia police that have spent $30 million in drug seizure disbursements to purchase things like laptops and tactical gear. In Fayette County, Georgia, about $115,000 of it was spent flying, feeding, and lodging sheriffs who attended seminars in Georgia, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina. In Palatine, Illinois, $65,000 of seized money was approved to purchase new fitness equipment for the police station. And now, in Suffolk County (Long Island) New York, money seized from pot smokers is being used to help parents drug test their kids at home:

We have identified commonly used soap and wash products used for newborn and infant care as potential causes of false positive THC screening results. Such results in this population can lead to involvement by social services or false child abuse allegations.

The glaring problem with any sort of studies regarding marijuana and driving is that marijuana is illegal. Do pot smoking drivers drive slower, stay in their lane better, give more distance between cars, have fewer fatalities, etc., because they are safer drivers, or because the threat of any interaction with police will result in arrest and a drug record rather than just a ticket or a warning?

The government claims to fight the War on Drugs in the name of our health and safety, yet they’re complicit in a rising addiction to opioid pharmaceuticals that killed more Americans in 2008 than have died in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the World Trade Center combined. Meanwhile, the Drug War they are fighting prevents us from applying the cure to this painkiller problem, since we have scientific evidence that cannabis works synergistically with opioids to deliver better pain relief with less pills, we have surveys showing medical marijuana patients are able to reduce their use of painkillers, cannabis has been shown to be a superior remedy for neuropathic pain, and doctors are now suggesting cannabis therapies for pain before opioid therapies because of cannabis’ non-toxicity and low risk of side effects.

About 10 percent of the positive marijuana results and 30 percent of the positive cocaine tests did not meet widely accepted scientific standards and should not have been reported to police and prosecutors.
