We must also assure the George Wills of the world that legalization of marijuana is not likely to be the “7-Eleven Model”. Why can’t legal marijuana be subject to the same advertising restrictions, government admonishment, and public segregation that legal tobacco is subject to? Why do prohibitionists assume it would have to be just like alcohol with clever Super Bowl commercials, sexy spokesmodels, celebrity endorsements, and a thinly-veiled agenda to market to youngsters? (Oh, yeah, because we keep saying “treat it like alcohol”…)

“What About the Stoned Drivers?!?” is built on a false premise that once we legalize marijuana, suddenly there will be stoned drivers. It’s as if without legalization, there are no pot smokers, which, of course, is ludicrous. On the other hand, here are some scary drivers that legislators never seem to mention. An estimated one in six fatal crashes — nearly 17 percent — involves a drowsy driver, which is about four to five times higher than previous studies have found. And drowsy drivers are involved in one in eight crashes that result in serious injury, the report found.

“Society does not want to accept that people consume [drugs],” he told RCN Radio in Colombia. “You cannot turn away from reality. We cannot accept that theory. [American politicians] may prefer not to talk about it. We cannot accept it.. We cannot be condemned to live in war because Americans do not want to talk about it. No one speaks in favor of the war on drugs.”

(Huffington Post) Fifty-six percent of the delegates at the Denver County Republican Assembly voted in support of a resolution to regulate marijuana like alcohol in the Centennial State. While the initiative, known as Amendment 64, did not receive the two-thirds majority required to adopt it as a plank in the party’s platform, advocates are hailing [...]
