Music: Carolyn Wonderland - “Annie’s Scarlet Letter”

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Miss Understood

At the beginning of this month, Cannabis Karri posted the new song from Carolyn Wonderland, “Misunderstood”.  In her notes, Karri mentioned a previous Carolyn Wonderland song called “Annie’s Scarlet Letter”, which tells the tale of a young woman busted for dealing pot (you can see the video at this link).

I figured that the song deserved a play on the Stash, so enjoy the compelling songwriting and heartfelt vocals of Carolyn Wonderland.

Music: The Dirtball - “Moonshine Rhyme”

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

My homie The Dirtball is back with another slammin’ track from his CD “Crook County”, because my other homie, Cannabis Karri, is up to her elbows in making tie-dyes for the upcoming summer festival season (you can check out her work at Planet Fantastic).

The Dirtball raps on Suburban Noize Records and I love how he incorporates fresh new sounds into his beats. You’ll hear instruments and genres in his music that reflect the wide open spaces of central Oregon along with his lyrical flow that fits perfectly into any urban setting.

Music: Chief Greenbud - “I’m Gonna Get High”

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Time for our musical break, and while Cannabis Karri has the day off, I’m going to bring you another new track from my favorite cannabis singer/songwriter, Chief Greenbud from Nashville, Tennessee.  Today’s song is “I’m Gonna Get High”, which I’m guessing is what the Chief thinks as he’s boarding that flight to Portland to appear at our Portland Hempstalk festival on the weekend after Labor Day.  No, actually it is another of his fantastic parody songs, like his “It’s Only a Weed” (”Hey There, Delilah”) that he performed on my cable access show in Portland.

You can get more Greenbud music by checking out the Chief’s MySpace page.

Music: Roger Alan Wade - “Stoned Traveler”

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Stoned Traveler

We hear all kinds of blues on Blue Monday’s Stash, today we visit some countrified blues with ROGER ALAN WADE and a great stash song, “Stoned Traveler”.  Roger Alan Wade is well know for having a famous cousin, Johnny Knoxville, and his album is by Knoxville’s record label (who knew Johnny Knoxville took time away from his groin-punishing antics to run a record label company?). All Jackass references aside, Roger’s music sells itself. He has written music for many of country music’s greats and he wrote the number one country hit, “Country State of Mind” that was recorded by Hank Williams Jr. This is a stripped down sound with a great folksy arrangement and Wade’s voice fits well into his laid-back country genre.  Wade calls Chattanooga, Tennessee home. Whether you are a stoned traveler this summer, or, due to gas prices, you take a stay-cation, may all your travels be happy!

Music: HANABiS - “On The Road Home

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

On today’s musical stash, we go global with Japanese rapper HANABiS from Okayama City, which is the hot spot in Japan for underground hip hop and the cannabis community. Today’s track was sent to the Stash by Gomyo, a Shingon Buddhist priest from Michigan living in Japan for the past 14 years who joins HANABiS on today’s track, “On the Road Home”.  Gomyo has been investigating the idea that Shingon priests may have used Cannabis in rituals prior to the occupation during and after WWII. Gomyo has also formed a group of monks who promote street Buddhism, incorporating street culture such as hip hop, into modern Buddhist practice. His group is called HOODIE MONKS. This collaborative track comes from Hanabis’ first solo album “Just Time 420″ and features not only our friend, Goymo, but Hoodie Monk member DJ Aqb (pronounced AH  KOO BEE, which means ‘yawn’ in Japanese) and DJ Kazushit, This track is recorded in English,  Japanese and Kick-Ass groove. Exolore the world of Japanese rap, you’ll love what you hear! Konnichiwa! For more on HANABiS check out his myspace page.  For more information on our friend Goymo and his group, Hoodie Monks visit  http://hoodiemonks.org.

Music: Jerry Chiappetta, Jr. - “The Reefer Song”

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Welcome to hump day/hemp day on the stash! We have many warriors in our Cannabis Army and today we meet JERRY CHIAPPETTA JR. who tells it like it is in “The Reefer Song”. Jerry is a real renaissance man and his music transports me back to a time when feel-good music was king and an easy-going love song with a little guitar was the only soundtrack you needed. Jerry calls Naples, Florida home and that laid-back beach attitude is reflected in his music. A gifted songwiter, Jerry reminds me of Jimmy Buffet or Sammy Johns with a message I can believe in. A line in his lyrics, “here is a solution to our Country’s debt, we need to wrap it up and tax it so it’s easier to get” should end with a “Hallelujah!” You can hear more of Jerry Chiappetta’s music on his myspace page, and you can download his music on Itunes.

Dancehall, Bhangra In Future Dub

I love the interesting, and today on the stash, KUSH ARORA brings us some experimental Ragga music with today’s stash hit, “Weed Control”.  When the US and Europe were falling in love with the synthesizer and carving out electronic dance music, our friends in Jamaica were giving birth to Ragga music, the electronic child of Reggae. Kush Arora blends Indian music, reggae and his own quirky version of dancehall to create a lush new sound in Dancehall Dub. Kush grew up as a drummer and electronic music lover and is active in the underground San Francisco artists scene. Visit his myspace page to experience more of Kush Arora. Music: Eddy Clearwater - “Help Yourself”

Help Yourself

Some smooth blues to ease your Monday, Stashers. EDDY CLEARWATER is here to fill all our Blue Monday needs. Today’s track “Help Yourself” has one simple message, you don’t need no doctors, you can help yourself! Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater is Chicago blues style at it’s best. He has toured Europe with Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. He is a fierce guitar player, and after 60 years of playing to crowds around the world, this blues man is still gigging - often in full Indian headdress, an homage to his Cherokee heritage. Check out his web page at eddyclearwater.com for more information on the Chief.

Good day my smoky friends! We get some kick-ass rock and roll today on the stash with SKRACHT APPLE.  It’s time for a Revolution and the boys from Skracht Apple provide us the soundtrack with “Songs of the Revolution”. We have seen the collateral damage of the drug war; families needlessly torn apart. Today’s song is about a young mother who is victim to this unnecessary war. Skracht Apple is Clay Sigletary on guitar, Ducky Medlock singing his heart out, Chris Boon pounding the bass and Lee on Drums. It is time to stand together and demand our government  change unfair cannabis laws.  Skracht Apple rocks out of North Carolina. Visit thier myspace page and discover more of their amazing music!

Music: Billy Boy - “New Jail House Blues”

Billy Boy Sings Sonny Boy

Welcome to Blue Monday! A tribute within a tribute, today’s musical hit comes from the blues legend that suggested Ellis McDaniels use the name “Bo Diddley” in a song they were making up on the spot during a recording session. As I channel Paul Harvey….and now you know the rest of the story….. It doesn’t get much bluer than the Chicago Blues, and today on the stash we have Chicago blues legend Billy Boy Arnold with the hit, “New Jail House Blues”. I don’t think that you get to enjoy a podcast if you are behind bars, but if any Stasher has been able to enjoy the NORML Daily Audio Stash while incarcerated, let us know by leaving a comment. Unfortunately, far too many cannabis consumers have had a stint as a POW. Billy Boy Arnold began playing harmonica as a child in Chicago and in 1948 received informal lessons from his near neighbor, John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson, shortly before his death. In 1952 a small record company gave Arnold the nickname “Billy Boy” on his recording debut. “New Jail House Blues” is a track from a long-overdue album, recorded in 1992 but released just last month. Billy Boy Arnold comes full circle with a wonderful tribute to his mentor, the Original Sonny Boy, John Lee Williamson.

Music: Carolyn Wonderland - “Misunderstood”

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Miss Understood

Today on Blues Monday I am serving up a song that many can relate to as cannabis consumers with the track “Misunderstood” by the mighty force that is Carolyn Wonderland. She has a voice like an ocean and she is a guitar goddess on her trusty guitar, “Patty”. For the record, she also plays trumpet, keyboards, accordion and mandolin. I am pretty sure she invented sliced bread. You may have seen Carolyn’s video of her song, “Annie’s Scarlet Letter” about a young mother imprisoned by the drug war. (If you haven’t seen it, watch it here) Her poignant message has no doubt touched many. Carolyn is a freedom fighter, a talented songwriter and a national treasure. You can learn more about the fabulous Ms. Wonderland on her website, carolynwonderland.com.

UPDATE: I just heard that rhythm and blues legend Bo Diddley just passed on this Blues Monday. Thanks for all the great music Bo. You will be missed, and remembered and copied and revered and immortalized and adored for your contributions to music.

UPDATE TOO: “Radical” Russ here - Here’s that video of “Annie’s Scarlet Letter”.

Music: The Tall Brothers - “Jive Cake Stuffin’ “

Friday, May 30th, 2008

TallbrothersWelcome back to the stash! I also welcome back our favorite BC buds, THE TALL BROTHERS. Today we enjoy another one of thier wonderful reefer jazz tunes, “Jive Cake Stuffin’ to take us into the weekend. The brothers , Thomas and Bill Small, are the core of this legendary Vancouver, BC band. Bill helped launch the British Columbia Compassion Club Society that provides low-cost, high quality organic medicinal marijuana to anyone with a doctor’s prescription. Tom started writing music at the age of 8, plays all kinds of instruments and has worked as an audio engineer. Both brothers have a long musical resume in different musical genres. Taking their inspiration from 30’s and 40’s reefer jazz tunes from greats like Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole, the Tall Brothers have a classic jazz sound with a contemporary twist. According to their website, the band’s name comes from an old reefer jazz tune called “Man with the Jive” where a line exclaims “Light up baby and get real tall!” Let’s all get real tall this weekend! Please visit their myspace page to sample and download this uber-cool music, or visit 420tunes.ca to purchase their amazing CD. Go ahead and buy two or three copies, it will be the coolest gift you give someone this year.
