Music: Julian Fauth - “Roll on In”

Ramblin' Son

Welcome to Blue Monday, Stashers! Today we get a great blues track from JULIAN FAUTH with his musical hit, “Roll on In” from his well received second album, Ramblin’ Son. Julian Fauth has taken his contemporary blues sound to breathe life into old blues music. He was introduced to blues at six years old when his radio announcer father brought home some old discarded albums. Those old LP’s with greats like Muddy Waters and Lighting Hopkins, introduced Julian to what has become a lifetime of blues music. Julian’s mad piano skills have seen him opening for Buddy Guy and BB King and touring around the world, including Cuba, Europe and the United States. This Toronto blues man is destined to leave his own blues legacy just like the greats that have come before him.

Music: The Dirtball - “Mushroom Cloud”

Friday, May 16th, 2008

After wreaking havoc on the road rocking sold out crowds across the country, Oregon based rapper The Dirtball is bringing it home with the release of his third solo album, Crook County. While in the past his accelerated rhyming skills have kicked his career into overdrive, now with his latest release it’s his songwriting skills that have him cruising in the fast lane.

Inspired by the beauty of his home state and his love of creating music, Crook County’s diverse mixture of rock and hip-hop is eclectic enough to leave fans of all genres salivating for more. Powered by the machinegun attack of his motor-mouth and irresistible hooks, the album can dazzle fans of Southern Rap (Ying Yang Twins, Lil Jon), battle mainstream heavyweights (Twista, Lupe Fiasco), or stands toe-to-toe with underground legends (Tech 9ne, Kottonmouth Kings, or Insane Clown Posse).

The Dirtball raps hard in this cut, “Mushroom Cloud”. Take a listen and recognize that reefer rap is alive and well over here in Oregon. Represent!

Music: Mikey Dread - “Dizzy (Herb Smoker)”

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

The Prime of Mikey DreadThe definition of the word, IRIE is total peace with your current state of being. It is the way you feel when you have no worries. Today’s musical hit, “Dizzy (Herb Smoker)” from MIKEY DREAD sings about the mystical state of mind when one is dizzy. We know what that means. Michael Campbell will always be known as Mikey Dread to his legions of fans around the world. He was one of the most influential performers and innovators in reggae music. His abilities, technical expertise, and unique vocal delivery created a unique sound that lets you know it’s “Dread at the Controls”. (the name of his radio show) Mikey was a technical wizard and held degrees in engineering and electronics. He started his career as an engineer for the Jamacian Broadcasting Corporation in 1976 and that led to him hosting the most popular Jamaican radio program of all time and the first to play only reggae music. He has played alongside reggae greats Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Inner Circle, and Third World. He has shared the stage with Bob Dylan, UB40 and Carlos Santana. He produced music for and toured with The Clash, and he has won more awards than I could list here. Mikey was diagnosed with a brain tumor in October of 2007 and died on March 15th earlier this year. It is not too late to get to know this amazing artist through the legacy of music he has left here for us to enjoy. If you visit his web page at mikeydread.com you will hear his famous voice, thick with Jamaican accent, welcoming you to his page and inviting you to look around. If you haven’t already, I would take him up on that invitation. Thanks Mikey for making us feel so Irie for all these years!

Subliminal Freedom Vol. 1

Welcome to hump day/hemp day on your daily stash. Today we have the AMPHIBEUS TUNGS with their feel good track, “Smoke that Feelen”. Maybe it’s because the Amphibeus Tungs are from Hawaii, but this hip hop track is as relaxing as Indica on a white sand beach. Or maybe it’s because this group has two Jays (two Jays are always better than one!). Founded by Beau Sun, Quest Eons and Doc. Platypus and welcoming turntabalists Pazess One and Jai Freedom Lewis with DJ Jay Peace Pipe and One Chef Strum, these guys groove just as much as they rhyme. I love the vibe that the Tungs lay down on this track, it is the perfect song to groove us through the week. This is one you will want to add to your basement party mix tape! Mahalo and Aloha!

Music: Josh Belville - “Get Stoned Together (demo)”

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Hey Stashers, “Radical” Russ here. Welcome to Monday, May 12, 2008, or as I like to call it, my youngest brother’s 25th birthday! Yes, that cute chubby baby on the left is all grown up now, and as his oldest brother, it is my job to publicly embarrass, er, I mean, support my brother in all his endeavors.

Josh is incredibly talented, and that’s not just a proud big bro talking. He’s soon to graduate Boise State University as a theater arts major. He’s a gifted actor, director, and playwright in addition to being a talented singer/songwriter and guitarist. To the best of my knowledge, Josh isn’t a cannabis consumer, but as I was checking out his music on MySpace, I told him that someday he needed to write me a song about weed so I could promote him on the Stash.

Two days later Josh knocked out a demo on his four-track recorder. It’s this cute little disco-ish tune called “Get Stoned Together”, and he plays the guitar, bass, and cheesy keyboards as well as programming the drum machine and singing all the vocals. It helps fill the gap left by the lack of marijuana love songs - there are lots of songs about loving weed, but few about loving someone by sharing weed.

Enjoy the demo. Josh is moving here to Portland in the summer, and we’ll be collaborating on this song and others (I play bass, my cousin plays drums, and his mom has a great recording studio). We’ll let you know when the finished product is ready!

Music: Chief Greenbud - “The Legalization Song”

Friday, May 9th, 2008

ChiefGreenbudHappy Friday, Stashers! I was so proud to be standing next to some of my fellow cannabis warriors in the Global Marijuana March last weekend. In the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon, we got to enjoy music from today’s artist, CHIEF GREENBUD. He entertained the crowd with his music and personality. A talented country and folk artist, he is the whole package, a one man guitar band with a message and a mission.  Today’s track, “The Legalization Song” is a poignant anthem with a simple question, “What do we do about legalization?” A comedian at heart, Chief Greenbud calls Nashville, Tennessee home but travels freely between festivals, events, biker rallies and fairs leaving behind smiles and friends. We owe a lot to the comedians who push acceptance of cannabis culture into mainstream society using laughter as their weapon of choice. Hail to the Chief! You can visit Chief Greenbud’s myspace page to hear more of his music and buy his CD (it’s sooo good). Add the Chief as a friend, he is a friendly guy and he LOVES to have new friends.

Music: Random Orbits - “Blow Back”

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Welcome to Thursday, Stashers! Today on the Stash your delicious afternoon snack comes from RANDOM ORBITS, a jam band from Ellensburg, Washington. Not your crazy uncle’s jam band, these guys thrash like punkers, play smooth grooves like jazzmeisters and lay down vocals like rock and roll superstars. With Steven Cole on guitar, Ryab Daley on bass and Blake West on drums this lean trio relies on talent to fill out thier sound. Today’s hit, “Blow Back” has all the highs and lows of a junior high school goth girl. Dubbed “Punk Floyd” by RO’s loyal fans, these young lads are breaking out with the emerging sound of a post-Phish jam band universe. If you happen to be in Seattle this weekend, Random Orbits is playing an all-ages show on the 11th at Studio Seven. Let them know you heard them on the stash! MudvilleIf you love Joni Mitchell or Tori Amos, you will love today’s musical hit from “MUDVILLE”. The track “Stoned” is a beautiful, haunting song with a dream-like quality that will soothe you through the middle of the week. Music: The Undercover Hippy - “Too Stoned”

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Welcome stashers! THE UNDERCOVER HIPPY brings us a danky hit with his song, “Too Stoned”. Starting out as a DJ at 16, this UK artist spent years as the MC for the “Guerrilla Collective”, a drum and bass collective based in Singapore. In 2002 he sold his turntables and bought a guitar. It seems to have been a great career move as he now plays music all over the world. This great toker tune comes from his first album, “They feed on Greed” and it is an instant cannabis classic. Big Lonesome Radio

Welcome to the Blue Monday music stash! A real blues man, MARK LEMHOUSE sings the blues on, “You Can’t Get that Stuff No More”. In our black/grey market of cannabis, this is a familiar song to many. I have sang the lament many times over the years. Lemhouse, an American Roots and Folk Blues artist has received national recognition as both an outstanding songwriter and performer. His songwriting style is showcased in the impressive guitar work and easy-going lyrical quality. Mark calls Salem, Oregon home. We can hope for a brighter tomorrow, post-prohibition world where you can get that stuff some more! Visit Mark’s website, he is very funny and you can hear more of his music.

Music: Freedom People - “New (R)evolution”

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Freedom PeopleIt is a very special Friday stash today. This weekend you get the chance to stand up and be counted. The cannabis community parties and celebrates on 420, but the first weekend of May is always reserved for some peaceful protest. Please join your cannabis community in our Global Million Marijuana March as thousands of us will get together across the globe. I couldn’t think of a better song than “New Revolution” from the FREEDOM PEOPLE to put you in the right frame of mind. The musical duo of Brad Stanfield & Periel Marr are equal parts hippie and Rock and Roll. Today’s track speaks to the great truth that freedom isn’t free. It takes you and me and our whole cannabis community standing together to uphold our rights. This is the most important thing that you can do to help us legalize recreational cannabis, provide medicine to those that are sick and help our planet by utilizing the amazing power of hemp. Visit the Freedom People’s website to learn more about the Brad and Periel, and I’ll see you at the march.

Music: Carlton Livingston - “100lb Collie Weed”

Retrospect

Welcome to Thursday, stashers! We have a classic reggae tune from a legendary Jamaican rasta man, CARLTON LIVINGSTON. Attending school in Trenchtown, Jamacia in the sixties, Carlton honed his chops with none other than the great Bob Marley, the godfather of ganja reggae. Carlton and a schoolmate would sneak away from school to listen and sing with a yet to be discovered Bob Marley and the Wailers. Recording music throughout the 70’s and 80’s Carlton gained a faithful following of reggae fans. His longevity in the business has finally landed Carlton the title of one of the top songwriters of Jamaica. Today’s track, “100lb Collie Weed” came from a 1992 recording session on Long Island, NY after he had moved to the US.

Music: Sly Joe and the Smooth Operators - “Mellow Mood”

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Sly Joe is back with a terrific song to take us over hump day, a cover of the classic Bob Marley tune, “Mellow Mood”. Along with his band, SLY JOE AND THE SMOOTH OPERATORS, he puts a decidedly fresh and contemporary spin on this reggae love song. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Joe was a gifted musician from an early age performing classical piano at 11 years old, and playing guitar in Wisconsin’s Honors Jazz Ensemble at 17. His playing is always fresh and imaginative with influences like the Beatles, Zepplin and Jack Johnson. If you are in or near Wisconsin, you can visit Sly Joe’s myspace page for up-coming show dates. He has even played at Lambeau field. (Stash Host, Radical Russ’ spiritual mecca!) Get in a Mellow Mood and enjoy today’s musical hit.

Music: Sunshine Variety Club “Green-Bong Mix”

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Sunshine Variety ClubI am bringing you a little Sunshine today, and I mean the SUNSHINE VARIETY CLUB variety. Today’s song “Green-Bong Mix” is a trippy little morsel, bursting with complex flavors and sprinkled with a little emo. This UK based band is fronted by lead singer Neil Fowler who sounds a bit like Morrissey or even Michael Stipe. Rob Jenkins plays a nice melodic guitar line, Lynton Bloomfield fills in chunky bass lines and Neil Anderson plays drums on this song. I’m not sure who is playing the bong in this song, but they do a pretty good job too. You can visit their myspace page for more information and downloads of their music.

Music: Supersuckers - “Can Pipe”

Friday, April 25th, 2008

SupersuckersFriday on the stash and it’s time for some rock! Today we get just that with SUPERSUCKERS and their song, “Can Pipe”. If you’re gonna rock, then rock ferociously! Growing up in Tuscon, Arizona the Supersucker boys went to grade school together and graduated from the same high school. They formed the band in 1988 and after firmly proving themselves to be the best band in town, they decided it was time to get out of Tucson. They tossed a coin with heads being New Orleans and tails being Seattle. Tails it was, so now they “rock on” with the Northwest as their base camp and the world as their playground! Supersucker is made up of frontman and bass player Eddie Spaghetti, Dan “Thunder” Bolton and Rontrose Heathman on guitars, and their most recent addition, Scott Churilla on Drums. (You may know Scott as the drummer for Reverend Horton Heat for over a decade) This tune not only rocks like a thunder storm, it makes me nostalgic about the days before there were any head shops in my town. Fall in love with the Supersuckers on their website, supersuckers.com.
