You might’ve first heard a Sean Hayes remix at the Banana Republic or maybe it was at Prada’s Milan store, a dance club in Thailand, or a Miami restaurant. If nightclubs and high-end retail aren’t your scene, then perhaps it was in your car, while listening to a local folk radio station or national tastemaker like WFUV or KCRW. But most likely, and if you’re lucky, you first discovered Sean Hayes years ago at a neighborhood bar or at one of the dark, intimate boho venues of San Francisco’s Mission District, where he still lives and sometimes plays unannounced shows. Wherever you first encountered the soulful, rattlesnake charm of Sean Hayes, it no doubt left you tapping your feet and shaking your head long after the music faded.

B-Real and Cypress Hill have been a staple of pot culture since the album ‘Black Sunday’ premiered in 1993 with tunes like “Hits From the Bong” and “I Want to Get High”.  With success comes the opportunity for solo projects to emerge and B-Real has taken his opportunity with the ‘Gunslinger Mixtapes I, II, and III’, and with his recent full album release, ‘Smoke N Mirrors’.  The first single off that album is fittingly named “Fire” and features Damien Marley, the youngest seed of the man himself, Bob Marley.  B-Real has a massive list of compilations available and has worked with more artists than are possible to list here.  I’ve also heard rumors of a “Super-Pot Group Compilation” with the Kottonmouth Kings, Potluck, and Cypress Hill called the ‘Kannabis Kartel’.  Cypress Hill broke off ties with Sony Records after the release of their last album and they will release a brand new album very soon called “Rise Up”, but as far as I know they are still looking for a label to release it.  There are rumors that Subnoize Records is the label to do it.  Subnoize already is the main label of Sen Dog, the other half of The Hill.  You can expect to hear a track our two from the new record on the NORML Daily Audio Stash.   For now enjoy the latest from B-Real “Fire”.  And, if you would like to email me you can toss anything to JohnDoe@JohnDoeRadio.com.  Good times.

“Reefer Slackness” is the perfect ambient chill-out tune for… well, sitting around and smoking up.

Originally a studio/remix project founded in 1998, Goettingen, Germany’s Sunburn in Cyprus used a revolving membership to create music outside of their usual work. Now typically a five-piece, they have a fluid line-up of guests and collaborators with buzz building thanks to publicity via British and Italian compilations as well as movie soundtracks in America and Europe, plus a heavy schedule of touring and festivals in Germany for the past four years and shows booked into 2010. Genre-busting but heavy on the electronica, the original songs and the remixes are certainly heady.

This track with its Middle Eastern, dub, and house influences will get you in the mood for doing nothing at all.

I am so excited to break the news that we have four new contributors to help bring you the Daily Audio Stash!  In response to my call for volunteer music editors I received a lot of applications and picked from the best of them to give you our new lineup:

These fine Stashers will be finding the best 420-friendly music on the web and bringing it to us each week.  You already know me and Cannabis Karri.  Sahra Kant joins us from Massachusetts; I met her up at the Boston Freedom Rally this year.  Johnny Reeferseed’s music has been featured on the Stash before.  And John Doe is the man behind John Doe Radio, another fine internet podcast.

But just because we have music editors that doesn’t mean you can’t still be involved.  If you have a band or have found a tune that you think should be on the Stash, just email it to me at stash@norml.org and I’ll pass it along to our editors.

Also join me in welcoming Amanda Bannon to our lienup of contributors.  Amanda is getting college credit as an intern working for me in NORML Chapter Outreach.  She will begin by reviving our dormant “Politicians on Pot” series, where you send us the replies you get from your elected officials when you write to them about ending marijuana prohibition.  If you haven’t written to your elected officials, visit our Take Action center and get started.  Now that the AMA has reversed its position on smoked cannabis as medicine, many of these congresspeople will need to update their form letter!  Write your congressperson and send that reply back to us at stash@norml.org.

Today’s Roots Monday tune takes us on a musical journey through rhythms and moods of contemporary jazz. The Jon Weiss Trio features pianist and vocalist Jon Weiss and jazz vocalist Rochelle Thompson, along with drummer Al Hicks and bassist Fred Zabin. I’m not sure why that doesn’t make them a quartet, but maybe it’s the Jon Weiss Trio, featuring Rochelle Thompson.

Regardless, Jon, Rochelle, Al, and Fred have played with many jazz greats and you can hear their solid chops on this album, “Migrating Songbirds”. Today’s toker tune is entitled “Ridin’ High”, and reminds us all how the cannabis culture in America had its roots in the jazz of the 1920’s and 1930’s. So get hep, vipers!

The Black Tie Bombers are a punk rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio, who say, “We like a lot of things and play pretty fast most of the time, while remaining catchy, much like AIDS. We aren’t very cool, have no fashion sense, and haven’t learned how to play our instruments yet.” Hey, sounds like punk to me!

Before signing to Pinky Ring Records in 2006 Black Tie Bombers have played numerous shows in the Midwest earning respect in the punk and hardcore scene. The band was also voted unsigned band to watch out for in A.P. magazine. Today’s tune comes from their album “Eternal Happiness and Good Health” and is called “There’s Still Time to Board the 7 O’Clock Smoke Boat”. I wonder if boarding the smoke boat is what leads to eternal happiness? Well, there’s only one way to find out…

Prophet Benjamin is from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, where  national elections were held on Monday and the United National Congress Party leader, Basedo Panday called for a new approach to dealing with marijuana in the island republic where selling stings have been set up recently to entrap tourists. “I think we ought to look at that to see whether prohibiting things really ends the problem,” Panday said during a pre-election radio forum. Panday recalled the “old days,” when there was a shop selling “ganja” in Princes Town and people would smoke it in chillums on Saturday nights after working in the fields all week. “It never was a problem.”  Marijuana laws throughout the Caribbean remain strict due to the US  putting pressure on local governments to crack down on all illegal drugs.  Trinidad and Tobago is the birthplace of calypso music, and it is no stranger to reggae root music. Dancehalls are still popular where you can hear reggae beats spilling out into the streets. There also must be fields of weed somewhere on the island paradise to inspire Prophet Benjamin to write todays music stash.

When you’re scanning the intertubes for good podsafe music, a name like “Doodoo Face” is going to make you take a second look.  “Doodoo Face” is the album from Wallpaper., the alter ego of Eric Frederic, a producer based in Oakland, California.  According to reports, Eric was neck-deep in a series of isolated studio all-nighters when the song “Doodoo Face” pushed him into the beyond. Boxed in by layers of percussive funk, dark synthesizer blurt and crushing bass, Frederic lost himself inside of Ricky Reed, the character he’d long ago conceived as Wallpaper.’s frontman. He gave in to Ricky’s rampant narcissism, love for party and supreme indifference, and as a result, discovered the guiding duality behind Doodoo Face, the album: There’s sadness inside all that celebration. A little madness too.

Today’s tune from the album “Doodoo Face” is called “I Got Soul, I’m So Wasted” and it reminds me of days long ago dancing at the clubs when a drug or two would make me the greatest dancer on the floor, an opinion with which no one outside of my wasted mind would agree.
