I was gone at Hempfest so I’m sure by now the mainstream media has plastered the news of this new study all over the airwaves, internet, and print, right?
(NIH PubMed) The effects of cannabis on lung function remain unclear and may be different to tobacco. We compared the associations between use of these substances and lung function in a population-based cohort (n=1037). Cannabis and tobacco use were reported at ages 18, 21, 26, and 32 years. Spirometry, plethysmography, and carbon monoxide transfer factor were measured at age 32. Associations between lung function and exposure to each substance were adjusted for exposure to the other substance.
Cumulative cannabis use was associated with higher forced vital capacity, total lung capacity, functional residual capacity, and residual volume. Cannabis was also associated with higher airways resistance but not with forced expiratory volume in 1 second, forced expiratory ratio, or transfer factor. These findings were similar amongst those who did not smoke tobacco.
By contrast, tobacco use was associated with lower forced expiratory volume in 1 second, lower forced expiratory ratio, lower transfer factor, and higher static lung volumes, but not with airways resistance.Cannabis appears to have different effects on lung function to those of tobacco. Cannabis use was associated with higher lung volumes suggesting hyperinflation and increased large-airways resistance, but there was little evidence for airflow obstruction or impairment of gas transfer.
Hmm, Im doing some Google news searches right now and I don’t seem to be finding this study. I’m finding all sorts references to how ‘My lungs are damaged beyond repair’ because Cannabis worse than tobacco. I’ve found Warning: smoking cannabis damages the lungs because Cannabis ‘may cause public health disaster’. I’ve learned that 1 joint equivalent to smoking up to 5 cigarettes: study and REGULAR CANNABIS USE RISKS SIMILAR TO THAT OF TOBACCO – …
Like the research that shows regular cannabis users have lower incidence of head and neck cancer and cannabis use in no way causes schizophrenia, this lung function data will be buried by the mainstream media. After all, very few mainstream media advertisers like to hear good news about marijuana; it’s bad for the sales of alcohol, benzodiazepenes, and opioids. The Alcohol Industry spends close to $1 billion a year on advertising (only 3% make up the “drink responsibly” ads) and the Pharmaceutical Industry spends over $19 billion a year on advertising (for comparison’s sake, that’s over two-thirds the entire budget of the National Institute of Health).
The finest lives, in my opinion, are those who rank in the common model, and with the human race, but without miracle, without extravagance….
Nothing fixes a thing so intensely in the memory as the wish to forget it….
44 yrs tobacco addiction,40 yrs daily reefer use Yea I’m good to go
As a cannabis consumer with asthma, I have known this to be true for years! Not only is it not bad for lungs, but there are parts of my lungs that I only can use after smoking. Works better than any pharmaceutical inhaler.
Just tuck this fact and study away for the next interview on TV and blast some prohibitionest with it, once again destroying their case and making them a fool!
I am not suprized that havent run it, like you said there advertizers may not like it! So much for true and honest news that just tells the facts of a story, hell cant even get them to tell the story anymore!
