It sure is nice to see some new billionaires contributing to the marijuana legalization movement:
(Forbes) Sean Parker, co-founder of Facebook and Napster, has joined his former colleagueDustin Moskovitz by cutting a large check towards the legalization of marijuana.
Not to be outdone by America’s youngest billionaire Moskovitz, who gave $70,000 to California’s Proposition 19, Parker has donated $100,000 to the ballot initiative that would make it legal to possess the drug for personal use.
The gift affirms the 30-year-old’s reputation for generosity, and puts him in a small but select group of very wealthy donors to pro-marijuana causes, including Moskovitz and Progressive Corp. billionaire Peter Lewis.
It’s nice to see people in the industrial hemp market recognize the need to legalize all forms of cannabis:
(Huffington Post) Dr. Bronner’s buys 20 tons of hemp oil for our soaps from Canada annually. For nearly ten years the Bronner family has financially supported bringing back non-drug industrial hemp farming in the US as an environmentally sustainable crop that can be made into a wide variety of products including food, cosmetics, clothing, building materials and more.
I have decided to personally give a $75,000 donation to Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) for “Get Out the Vote” efforts to pass Prop 19 in California, the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010. Adam Eidinger and Alan Amsterdam, co-founders of Capitol Hemp Clothing and Accessories, have donated an additional $25,000 as well. Dr. Bronner’s will also provide the company’s promotional fire truck to “sound the alarm” on college campuses across California. We hope to mobilize younger voters who are the primary victims of the war on cannabis who know first-hand the lies of cannabis prohibition.
My decision to support Prop 19 also stems from experience with medical cannabis in the case of a close friend who used cannabis to get through chemotherapy and survive stage-IV Hepatitis C. Her local dispensary was raided and shut down by drug war zealots from the local DA’s office. Since the proposition will make it easier for adults to have access to cannabis, citizens will enjoy improved access to a safe and effective medicine useful in treating a number of illnesses.
I have always supported legalization since so many of my friends benefited from it when ill with cancer. I have personally use it in cooking for my sick animals that were suffering from different types of cancer. They lived there last months in comfort and when they crossed over the Rainbow Bridge, they went peacefully and calm no medicines or surgery, the natural way holistically and with herb. So we must pass 19 for more so many reasons beside the joy of smoking, ps, I do not smoke but am a believer it should be legal!.
So How much Did the facebook guy donate? To me its about time some of these wealthy people that toke and the ones profiting from those that do toke, spend some of that cash to help the movement. In this political era money is the way to change minds and laws, we will need many more supporters to fork over funds to move legalizing across this nation. I worry once its legal in the states that now have medical or decrim thats as far as it will get just like medical and decrim too, and the people left in illegal states will just suffer just the same prop 19 or not. Cali, dont forget about the rest of us once you can have all the weed you want cuz we would like some too so pass the reform effort along to the rest of us so we too can have the freedom you will after 19 passes.
