The post on the Missouri SWAT Canicide Video I wrote on NORML’s front page has already generated over 100 comments. In rebuking the two or three commenters who are blaming the victim and siding with police I’ve been digesting Radley Balko’s excellent work in documenting this abomination of policing. Check out this story from June of last year:
CINCINNATI (WCPO) — A Blue Ash family is outraged after returning home to find their dog had been shot and killed by a police officer.
The dog was a Chihuahua-mix named “Jack” that Scott and Sharon Bullock had given to their 12-year-old son for his birthday a few years ago.
When the Bullocks returned home from a family member’s funeral on Friday, they found blood and three bullets on their front porch – along with a note to call the Blue Ash Police Department about their dog.
In this case, it wasn’t even a SWAT drug raid. It was two officers responding to the report of the puppy roaming free after it had escaped the family’s yard. It had bitten a jogger when the officers approached. They got the frightened puppy cornered on the family’s porch and then tried to grab it bare-handed. It bit the officer numerous times, they tased the dog. Then the puppy wouldn’t release its bite (electricity, muscle seizure, surprise!) so they shot it until it was dead.
Then – after the puppy is dead – the officers finally decide to call the SPCA. You know, the people trained to pick up frightened dogs that bite people.

Update: the Columbia Police are complaining that people are getting erroneous information on the shooting from “the blogs”. One piece they complain about is that the dog killed wasn’t the corgi, but the pit bull. I’ve never said the corgi was killed; I’ve said it was shot, which the police admit. I do apologize for repeating the rumor that the pit bull was caged.
But I did post a picture of a corgi to accompany my initial post, to illustrate how ridiculous it would be to shoot that dog for fear of one’s safety. I also didn’t emphasize the pit bull element of the story because of societal bias and stereotyping of these wonderful creatures as “vicious mankillers”. I didn’t want any of the shock of this story to be diffused by the notion that because it’s a pit bull, it deserved to be shot.
I apologize if that misled anyone. However, to me the haggling over which breed of dog or how much marijuana or what day the warrant was served is missing the forest for the trees.

Well after seeing this video and reading about others, I can only say that cops are cowards if they have to shoot little dogs. They should be removed from the force and go to jail. They aren’t any better than the people they arrest, they’re just as crooked.
Hasn’t anyone sent that video/link to the FDA/War on Drugs? I mean shit, this is beyond horrible. Hasn’t anyone done something to stop these cops from doing this abomination again? Corgis don’t pose a threat at all, even when angered(I use to rough house/wreslte around with one and the worst was a small break in skin that healed the next day).
