Black ash can also result when the matter is smoked at cooler temps as well. More often if it is nutes or pesticides yu will be able to taste or smell something definitely off about it, metallic taste being a common off taste and sign of nutes/pesticides in product (trace amounts really... you get exposed to the same amount out doors in a large city like LA as it is) . There are too many things that can cause black ash and more often than others it is usually something that is not a health hazard, just smething that might effect taste or make it a tad harsh. Also, more leafy and untrimmed bud will have darker ash than a bigger dense budded plant with excellent trim job. I often get bud like this that is nice, very dense, and burns with a nice medium-dark gray ash in bongs, and rolled a nice light gray in the middle but black on the outside. The person who grows it grows natural organic and has grown longer than I have been alive.... he has helped write the books. You are more likely to taste an off taste than have it in a volume that would effect ash.

They didn't mention that black ash can also be caused by improper drying/curing. As in, if it's not quite dry enough, it makes black ash and won't stay lit. So, if your cannabis is dry and still makes black ash, that's bad.
