Here is my latest update of the medical marijuana map I’ve been creating for years. I feel like this is my most comprehensive map yet.
- Medical marijuana states are colored green and decriminalized states are colored gold. States that have both medical and decriminalization are dark green. The year medical marijuana was passed is listed, plus the percentage of voter support if it was passed by initiative.
- States that are currently considering medical marijuana or legalization are surrounded by colored outlines. Other colors signify states that have tried to reform marijuana laws and failed in the past, with the year and voter support.
- Additional details about state marijuana laws, such as industrial hemp and zero tolerance per se DUID statutes, are indicated by icons. Also, check marks indicate the states where citizens have the power of initiative.
- UPDATE: I mistakenly colored Washington as both medical and decrim, when in fact it is only medical, in my first release of the map. I also made Massachusetts medical rather than decrim. I’ve corrected it now. I’ve also labeled all the states and re-labeled the decrim states with white text to match the color scheme of “white = current success / gray = setbacks / black = no progress”. More comprehensive data on hemp and DUID are now included. Web links to relevant data on NORML.org is added. Sorry for the mistakes; that’s what I get for proofing at midnight.
I’ve compiled these data from NORML.org and Ballotpedia – please let me know if you find any errors or have additions.

i hope florida legalizes soon. South Beach is the place to be!
The Illinois Senate has passed SB 1381–barely. It is now up for vote in the Illinois House–eventually. Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana Pilot Program: therefore IL should show as a turquoise lined state. Please continue to write your legislators!

Minnesota passed a Medical Marijuana bill in the House of Representatives and State Senate last year but Governor Tim Pawlenty vetoed it.
Hopefully with him not running for Governor this November are next Governor will sign it!
I imagine a map like this that has interactive states that you can click on with the different district representatives pictures and names and addresses and positions on mj law reform. If I knew how to put something like that together, I probably would. You could have state maps for state lawmakers and the big US map for the feds.
Interesting and enlightening map, thanks!
Another statistic which is significant is the number of states which, while they don’t currently allow legal access to medical cannabis, do have legislation recognizing the therapeutic value of the product.
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin recognized the medical value of cannabis as far back as 1978 (NM, LA, Fl, IL).
Most of these states still have laws on their books, but they have remained dormant and ineffective, primarily due to the use of the work “prescribe” in their legislation, which conflicts with federal laws banning prescription of Schedule I substances.

Most of us understand the ridiculous nature of cannabis prohibition, but to realize there are 23 states who actually admit it is genuine medicine, yet continue to deny it to the sick and dying, goes beyond ridiculous and is simply obscene.
