You may recall the ONDCP “Burrito Taster” ad campaign I mocked a while back (The Drug Czar’s Latest Ads – Your Tax Dollars Hard at Work (even if “potheads” aren’t). GanjaBlue via Twitter asked the universe for a parody of that ad featuring Michael Phelps.

I am the producer of The NORML Network, the host of the NORML SHOW LIVE and The NORML Stash Blog, and NORML's Outreach Coordinator. I'm married, live in Portland, Oregon, and I am a registered medical marijuana caregiver in this state. I've worked days as an IT geek and nights as a professional musician. Previously, I have been the host of my own political talk radio show on satellite radio. I've been the High Times "Freedom Fighter of the Month" and I travel across the country to educate people on marijuana reform. I've dedicated my life to bringing an end to adult marijuana prohibition and re-legalizing cannabis hemp, and I'm honored to be chosen by NORML to give voice to the Marijuana Nation and to speak for those who can't speak up.
I recently posted the following at NY Times, Reuter’s, DrCNet and now here. Feel free to copy and paste it in support of Michael Phelps and pot smokers in general.
Some confusion here…not unexpected. Kellogg has responded to the use of marijuana with typical authoritarian knee-jerk behavior. What they fail to realize, and this is affirmed by some of the preceding posts, is that the cannabis controversy is not about a drug. It is about money, and power. So many people get caught up in the debate about the harmful effects of pot versus alcohol and other substances that they lose sight of the real issue here. The Powers that Be use marijuana as a ‘gateway’ drug. The gate is the user’s front door, or possibly a window at three o’clock in the morning. The odor of pot is a handy excuse to wear body armor and masks, sporting a badge and kicking in the entryway. The ‘drug’ is innocuous, yet curiously testable for a month with a urine sample. Alcohol on the other hand returns a negative response after about seventy-two hours. For more facts (and fiction), go to http://www.drcnet.org. This is the premier site on the internet for unbiased information about drugs and their culture.
It’s a real shame…I liked their cereals. Now I too will boycott them.
God forbid! a productive pot smoker ! Lets see lock him up forever, and castrate him so he cannot produce another useful pot smoking generation . Are the people of this country that nieve, kinda like the witch trials of Salem Mass. Should we hold him under water till he dies or survives to prove his innocence .Obama even said he smoked pot and yes he did inhale yet we gave him the “highest” office in the land .They should have banned him from endorsements for presidency if indeed the crime was that serious but that did not happen .Time for a realization POT IS NOT the evil the government and the media make it out to be .I did not smell pot in the photo, not did I see pot in the photo. Prosecution improbable ,character assasination most probable . Media influenced characterization
HAHA Good Ad!
Is this something that maybe can be printed and left on peoples windshields or is that kind of action frowned upon?
fallibilist
The “War On Drugs” is a name meant to mislead the public about what is really going on. 85 percent of all “illegal” drug sales is marijuana commerce. What we are really up against is the Marijuana Prohibition Industrial Complex – made up of the world’s biggest human parasites.
Hi there, fellow NORML folk,
Looking at the comments on news sites, we see some of the anti-cannabis bigotry, steroeotyping, ignorance, and stupidity and it makes us sad, angry, and frustrated. How can people be so negative about marijuana when all the evidence says that, if smoked in moderation, it’s harmless? (Did I also mention that’s it’s both fun and tasty?)
I have a proposal to turn this around and make lemons out of lemonade.
Let’s ask ourselves a question: how do we know, for certain, that many if not most of the virulent anti-marijuana comments aren’t written by paid employees of the U.S. government? We know for a fact that the U.S. government uses our own taxpayer dollars to support positions that are far more restrictive than those that we, the taxpayers, actually have. The most flagrant example of this sort of abuse is that the past two Drug Czars–Messr.s Walters and McCaffrey–have actively lobbied against medical marijuana, even though 70% of Americans say “yes” to allowing MMJ.
Look, it’s just a fact that there’s a whole agency devoted to sustaining the culture of fear that justifies the billions of dollars spent locking-up non-violent, otherwise law-abiding Americans. They even have a blog. Aside from the DEA, many other federal agencies participate in the Drug War and receive increased funding when the war is intensified. State and local agencies are part of the same game. Billions of taxpayer dollars go to monitor and control what adults do in the privacy of their home. This is not to mention the amount of coercion and violence it takes to sustain our war on drugs. A lot rests on making sure that the general public is scared and misinformed–or at least that high-level politicians continue to believe that that’s what the public thinks.
So when you go to these message boards, remember: it’s very likely that many of the prohibitionist comments are being made by government workers, at taxpayers’ expense.
Don’t be alarmed at the proliferation of strong anti-marijuana sentiment. Sure, some of it may be real; but lots of it comes from bored, fat-ass narcs who have nothing better to do. Pretty clever, I guess.
But at the end of the day, the truth will out. That’s how we get the wins we’ve scored from California and Arizona to Michigan and Maine.
So don’t be deterred. Be brave. Stand up for freedom. Never surrender to bullies and cowards.
Our rights as Americans can, must, and will be restored.
Hit the bong one extra time, real hard, for liberty.
The Phelps case is a sad view of the current state of the American Inquisition.
Now comes Phelps’ recant.

>>>”I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,” Phelps said in the statement released by one of his agents. “I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”
Too bad. I would have liked to hear Phelps stand up for his life’s choices and declare there is nothing wrong with responsible adult marijuana consumption. Instead, he has accepted the mantle of “guilt,” not only for himself, but for the 100 million Americans who have consumed cannabis.
Regrettable, but understandable. One can just imagine the “intervention” performed on him by his coach, agent and family — all with grand expectations of riding the Phelps gravy train years into the future. It would take a person of extraordinary character to resist that onslaught.
So, having received their mea culpa, the Inquisitors will grudgingly remove him from the rack.
>>>”The USOC noted that Phelps acknowledged his mistake and apologized.
“We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the type of example we all expect from a great Olympic champion,” the group said.”
And a great Olympic champion could never consume a plant that is non-addictive and far less harmful than alcohol.
(sigh!)
I find it hypocritical of the media to even cover this Sh%&. All this talk about being irresponsible and all that… big whoop, Phelps setting a bad example… worry about yourself. The media is attacking this man for doing something in the privacy of his own free time. Straight up, it is the parents responsibility to teach their child what is ‘acceptable’ and ‘unacceptable’. If the media is so worried about setting a “GOOD” example for the youth then why the f*ck are they even covering this story.
That’s fantastic. Great job, Russ.
Help me get it on the Digg frontpage

Aw they’ve stopped accepting comments at cnn site. What I wanted to say there is that alcohol hurts athletes quite a bit. Studies show it greatly reduces protein synthesis, lowers testosterone, and increases cortisol, even after just a few and sometimes for many days after a binge. These changes in hormones makes it more difficult to gain muscle and recover. On the other hand, recent studies show that pot does not lower testosterone and there’s nothing to suggest that I’ve seen that it can interfere with muscle growth. Bodybuilders prefer pot to alcohol because of this, as well as it’s appetite stimulating effects.
What a horrible article. And the comments of the article have mostly people slamming this poor guys character. I’m trying to bring the norml fight to the comments and educate a little…

P.S. I am so sick of the “role model” card. People in this country have a real issue with personal responsibility. Your kids are YOUR responsibility and no matter how many medals he wins it will never be phelps job. You teach your kids and educate them. And at the same time please teach them to leave people alone and let them make their own adult choices with their free time.
[Quote]Two of Michael Phelps’ leading sponsors are expressing support for the olympic great..
Omega and Speedo both indicated the picture was a private matter for Phelps, and the olympic champion continues to be a valued representative for their products.[\Quote]
Great. Maybe Omega and Speedo would be interested in solidifying their position and will openly call for an end to the federal marijuana prohibition and an end to the policy that creates criminals out of innocent people?
Good job Russ, I already have it as my default pic on MySpace myspace.com/dermaldesigns
