INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) – A fired up Michael Phelps signaled he was back in top form when he rocketed to a world record in the 100 meters butterfly at the U.S. Nationals on Thursday.
The 24-year-old American erased any concerns he lacked motivation after he won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, ending compatriot Ian Crocker’s six-year grip on the 100 butterfly record.
Phelps’ power was on display when he went out fast and pulled away after the turn clocking 50.22 seconds, leaving Tyler McGill a distance second in 51.06.
Phelps now holds five individual world records — 200 and 400 individual medleys, 100 and 200 butterfly and 200 freestyle.
Phelps’ display also confirmed he is back to full fitness after a tumultuous six-month layoff following Beijing, which included a three month suspension from USA Swimming when he was photographed inhaling from a pipe used for smoking marijuana.
He also gained seven kilograms in weight and contemplated retirement but is now looking to add to his 17 world championships gold medals later this month in Rome.
The other funny story is that he’s doing a new endorsement deal with Subway where he touts the value of pigging out on a meatball sub. The clincher is the website URL: http://subwayfreshBUZZ.com

Listen man they will never legalize weed cause the pharmaceutical companies, the companies that make drugs like aspirin will lose business. This is the reason for them not legalzing.
I just got a Subway today for lunch and saw a big Michael Phelps ad on their menu touting the goodies he likes to add to his toasted sub, one of the fat-laden hi-calorie types of subs.
I told the “Sandwich Artist” how much I liked that the campaign’s website is “SubwayFreshBuzz.com” and she replied, “we get A LOT of comments about marijuana when people see that!”
It’s good to know Subway has figured out that a large portion of the market for fast food is stoners.
I wonder how much he is getting paid for his Subway adds, who needed Kellogg’s money anyway?
Shall we write to Subway to thank them for not being to concerned to hire a marijuana smoker? I’ll bet one day there will be another picture (that he will endorse) of him smoking a fatty…..Marijuana users always come back…..may take a week, or a month or few years, but they always come back….what’s not to love with this wonderful herb?
OK, I like Mike, but Im still upset that when all this Bong shit hit the fan, that he cowared and said It was wrong and bad of him to do it. He should have stood up and said the truth. He could have changed the minds of so many had he done that, and today with this new record he broke, it would be another testiment how less harmful marijuana is. He missed a huge chance to open this whole thing up and he failed all his fellow Bong smokers. I am so mad at him and yet he still is in the light and at any point he could stand up and still make a statement, but he wont!
This is why we dont have the respect of so many, we cant get all smokers to come out, until that happens we all will be fighting in the mud! Everyone needs to come out and say, Im a Cannabis user and its safer for me than alcohol or tobacco and as an American we should be free to choose what we put into our own bodies.
Im sick of this crap, we need to end Prohibition last year and yet we still are hunted like dogs because we smoke marijuana!
Of course he’s going to continue breaking world records – there’s never been a doubt in my mind that you can train at that level *and* still get high.
Now, if only he would change his position that what he did was a ‘mistake’…
Not bad for a pothead! Maybe the stuff’s not as bad as the DEA and ONDCP say it is.
Maybe it’s not bad enough for taxpayers to be funding a $40 billion a year prohibition against it. Maybe it’s not bad enough for us to be arresting 2,000 people every *day* just for possessing the stuff. And maybe it’s not bad enough for us to feel scared about telling our legislators to end the prohibition and license reputable businesses to legally produce and sell it to adults, with after-tax prices set too low for the drug dealers and cartels to match.
Last year the cartels murdered more than 6,000 people in order to protect their profits from selling marijuana in the U.S., so far this year they’ve killed another 3,000.
There are THREE THOUSAND people alive right now who will be DEAD by Christmas because we believe marijuana is so bad that we simply cannot allow it to be legally produced and sold to adults.
