I am the producer of The NORML Network, the host of the NORML SHOW LIVE and The NORML Stash Blog, and NORML's Outreach Coordinator. I'm married, live in Portland, Oregon, and I am a registered medical marijuana caregiver in this state. I've worked days as an IT geek and nights as a professional musician. Previously, I have been the host of my own political talk radio show on satellite radio. I've been the High Times "Freedom Fighter of the Month" and I travel across the country to educate people on marijuana reform. I've dedicated my life to bringing an end to adult marijuana prohibition and re-legalizing cannabis hemp, and I'm honored to be chosen by NORML to give voice to the Marijuana Nation and to speak for those who can't speak up.

What about MMA fighters who have to take medications for work related injuries that continue to plague them for months or years, sometimes hampering their performances or even keeping them out of the fight game all together? I’m gonna bet an MMA fighter who is taking prescription pills from a doctor for these types of injuries aren’t held up to the same standards as those who would like to use medical marijuana instead. No fighter should be able to take any type of medication on the day/night they step in to the ring, but they should be able to use it up until that point without being punished by the states athletic commission.

    To Dena:
I am so sorry that you are in such a horrible place and are, apparently, unable to escape to a more tolerant location. I can only suggest that you keep working toward that goal.

Regarding the use of cannabis for medical purposes when you want to fight MMA, I doubt that this will be allowed. This is not a rule targeted only at cannabis. The fighters must be clean of all prohibited medications and performance enhancing drugs. That is not necessarily a bad rule. It is there to protect the fighters and to ensure that the competition is based on natural ability.

One might question why cannabis is on the list of prohibited substances. I imagine that the commission would argue that cannabis is used as an analgesic. This might give the fighter an unfair advantage in the ring (cage, or whatever). But, it might also cause or allow the fighter to continue, in spite of injuries that otherwise would end the fight. This could cause the fighter to become injured even more severely.

If you want to fight MMA, you will have to accept physical discomfort. I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect that a fighter should be able to discontinue use of such substances for the last month or so before a fight. If you cannot do that, then it brings into question your fitness for the competition.

Just became aware of you today and I thank every single person for making this information, news, articles and for being so brave in doing so.

I am very ill and am living in the dark ages in Ohio and I am scared to death, but I want to participate however I can.

I wish I could move to a more benign state/State or community like Oaksterdam (even on Social Security). Here I have to hide/too dangerous to trust anyone here.

Thank you so much for this website and links that I just found today.
