Why shouldn’t we be allowed to make a profit on medicine? Big Pharma would never stand for this.
(LA Weekly Blog) One of the more farcical aspects of medical marijuana in Los Angeles is the flouting of state law, which says pot shops must be nonprofit.
So, getting back to state law: This is a nonprofit collective distributing homegrown cannabis among members who are “seriously ill?” Yeah, right.
So, here’s the deal. San Francisco Assemblyman Tom Ammiano wants to propose an “omnibus cannabis bill” to better oversee the medical pot industry.
Don’t worry, L.A. pot-shop owners. It sounds like what he wants to do is regulate it as-is — codify its status as a business and forget this nonprofit b.s. Maybe.

Dad3 said ,”helping growers offset costs to help the sick”. I believe that the
actual ‘costs’ are basically minimal for such a high priced ‘medicine’ . There
is room for huge profits on what should actually be a compassion based idea.
The price of compassion seems to hover around $250-300 per ounce. This seems
to be way out of line for a not-for-profit business.
Legalize it across the board and the people profiting from ‘compassion’ would be
out of business. Cannabis grows like a weed, and anyone can cultivate it. It should
basically be free to all who need it, cutting out those middlemen who actually reap
huge profits from a ‘medicine’ they cannot guarantee the potency of or the consistancy of
the ‘product’. This would kill the cartels also.
I could let some plants go to seed from a strong strain and distribute them for free to
needy individuals. Heads of households are allowed to brew 100 gallons of beer
and wine for personal consumption, why not treat marijuana the same? 12 pounds
per year per head of household. Boom, everything is fixed!
In some states, Barrycam will get you a criminal charge. In many states it is illegal to video tape police during arrests or encounters.
Hello fellow freedom lovers! I just want to pass this along. I only just learned about it. Barry Cooper sells a keychain video cam that I wish everybody could have. It’s on sale through today (2/21) for $99, regularly $299.
[Ed. note: link deleted]
Note: I am not associated with Barry Cooper in any way and do not make a penny from any of his sales. I just wanted to let people know about this device. It’s a must for any LE encounter. Check out the his short vids of the hidden camera being used.
Could not agree more…Hopeful that when full legalization comes we will have some actual non-profit companies donating to the terminally ill, or helping growers offset costs to help the sick. :)
When you do good things for the community, but decline to “toot your own horn” as it were, it is assumed that you did nothing. When you DO announce your contributions, your detractors will proclaim far and wide that you only did it for the glory. For me to contribute anything more to this discussion would serve only to exacerbate an already growing rift in the legalization community between medical and recreational.
On the story, its upsetting to me that the medical movement has put up with the way profit has over run the medical marijuana in the state. Im very upset that sick people have to pay street prices for their meds, how is that any better than before minus the arrests? I always thought that medical marijuana should be free to all sick people period, or at a greatly reduced price, but CA and others you have done is now legally profit from sick people and to me your no better than the Insurance co. and Big Pharma and their $50 pills that cost them 2c to make. If anything please when we have legalized cannabis can these places at least give free meds to the sick people that need it? Come on isnt that what we all envisioned when all these laws passed anyhow, helping the sick and making their lives easier, not profiting from them, or was that the main goal all along?

Holy Smokes. Slightly off subject. Remember the blonde woman who appears in the Marijuana Inc/USA documentry. Ms. Alex Datig. Well, a little research shows that she is a recovered alcoholic and proud of her sobriety. No fault there, Good for her. However, she sure does take the spotlight to tell others how to live thier lives. She appears to have solicited donations for the the anti-19 campaign on one of her many websites. Now, on the form to make donations there is nothing to indicate the legal status (i.e. non-profit, political action committe) of the organization? Could she collect donations pay herself a nice “Admin” fee and make a small contributuion to the cause all under a non-profit status? I could not find the legal filings for thenipitinthebud2010.org and the website doesn’t state anything other than the “Nip It In The Bud: No on Prop. 19 ID# 1323410″ If it smells like tuna, it is tuna. This is only my opinion.
