(Huffington Post) Three television stations in San Francisco and Los Angeles have rejected an ad promoting the legalization and taxation of marijuana, set to run on consenting stations and cable networks in the state beginning Wednesday.
Two ABC affiliates joined one NBC station in the decision to reject the spots. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, meanwhile, has called for a debate on legalizing marijuana.
“I think it’s time for a debate,” he said in May. “And I think that we ought to study very carefully what other countries are doing that have legalized marijuana and other drugs, what affect it had on those countries, and are they happy with that decision.”
KABC in Los Angeles and KGO and KNTV in San Francisco apparently aren’t interested in such a debate. “How can you debate it if they won’t air both sides?” wondered Bruce Mirken, a spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, which is behind the ad buy that he called “modest but not trivial.”

I am the host of the NORML SHOW LIVE and The NORML Stash Blog. I'm married, live in Portland, Oregon, and I am a registered medical marijuana caregiver in this state. I've worked days as an IT geek and nights as a professional musician. Previously, I have been the host of my own political talk radio show on satellite radio. I've been the High Times "Freedom Fighter of the Month" for my work producing Oregon NORML's TV show, "A Cannabis Community Forum", and for helping to institute Portland's wildly successful medical marijuana cardholders meetings, where we help sick and disabled Oregonians acquire cannabis plant starts, learn gardening, and understand the medical marijuana law. I've dedicated my life to bringing an end to adult marijuana prohibition and re-legalizing cannabis hemp, and I'm honored to be chosen by NORML to be our daily voice.

“California already has a public consensus on Pot…”
RE: Todd,
- Even though this is so,
not all in the consensus
are in the know…
for reasons stated by HIGH EAST.
(“…If not for the internet…”).
- Those who only get their news from
over-the-air broadcast MSM
and newspapers,
(as opposed to Cable-TV and Internet),
will only be shown the
disorted-negative side of
“taxed-and regulated” retail-cannabis.
(Such as raising the issue of
“smoking-hazards”, even though the use of
LOW-TEMPERATURE VAPORIZATION
makes that a MOOT point).
- We SHOULD HAVE commercials
in ALL 50 STATES, however,
New York and California ought to
take initiative, FIRST…
Makes you appreciate the internet a whole ot more. If not for the internet, and free open information, the controlled media would either not report the news at all or they would only report the lies and propaganda.
If not for the internet we might all think marijuana is litterally “concentrated evil”
Ha-Ha
For those in the california area, does anyone know which local stations refuse to air the ads? If your local you might want to email the stations.
This is about the stations fear that they will lose advertisers if they run those ads. And it’s true. They would, briefly, lose some.
The sales people would have to break from their mundane routines of easy money and work the phones for new dollars. They could replace any lost brands with new ones but that would be bump in an otherwise known road.
California already has a public consensus on Pot so to me it’s kind of a waste of ad’s. We should have commercials in NY. New York is ready and needs a good push, our Governor also seems more outgoing about Marijuana Legalization than old Arnold. With 2 big States like CA and NY calling for Legalization surely it will be heard.
