Today’s musical break is going to take us to the country side of the tracks, y’all. Well, maybe that’s not quite accurate. While at first glance Jason Boland and the Stragglers’ music may seem easy to stereotype as Texas or Country, intent listening makes it harder to categorize their music easily, revealing the influence of the land and life that got them to where they are. Boland knows he can’t shy away from questions about how to classify his music but simply states, “The Chinese don’t call it Chinese food, its just food. I’m just making music.”
Here Jason Boland tells about his baby who loves him when he’s stoned. He might be talking about alcohol (“knock a couple back” instead of “take a couple drags”, for instance), but a good chorus is a good chorus.

I am the host of the NORML SHOW LIVE and The NORML Stash Blog. I'm married, live in Portland, Oregon, and I am a registered medical marijuana caregiver in this state. I've worked days as an IT geek and nights as a professional musician. Previously, I have been the host of my own political talk radio show on satellite radio. I've been the High Times "Freedom Fighter of the Month" for my work producing Oregon NORML's TV show, "A Cannabis Community Forum", and for helping to institute Portland's wildly successful medical marijuana cardholders meetings, where we help sick and disabled Oregonians acquire cannabis plant starts, learn gardening, and understand the medical marijuana law. I've dedicated my life to bringing an end to adult marijuana prohibition and re-legalizing cannabis hemp, and I'm honored to be chosen by NORML to be our daily voice.
Among other swag sold at JB&S concerts are rolling papers. Selling for $4.20, they are pretty popular!
There are LOTS of references in Boland’s songs on all his albums and throughout the “Red Dirt” genre in general. It is no accident.
