I’ve made a change at the NORML SHOW LIVE portal to display a larger webcam screen of our show without all the listener webcams and chat. This is just if you’re accessing the show from http://live.norml.org (which redirects to http://stickam.com/normlshowlive), if you’re clicking in from the player up in the header, you’ll be taken straight to the chat window.
I did this because I felt that new visitors randomly surfing to the show should get the show without being distracted by some folks in the webcam chats sparking up a bowl or a joint during the show.
Which leads me to this…
(Omaha World-Herald) You never know who’s watching online.
Just ask 44-year-old David K. Johnson. The former Gretna resident was arrested earlier this month after Sarpy County Sheriff’s investigators connected him to about 90 “how-to-smoke-marijuana” videos on YouTube that also feature Johnson’s sons.
Lt. Steve Grabowski said the videos — filmed over a 16-month period that ended about two months ago — show Johnson rolling joints and smoking marijuana from pipes and bongs with his two sons, ages 20 and 17.
Grabowski said an anonymous tip started the investigation, and a search warrant was issued Jan. 12 on Johnson’s then-home at 21406 Buffalo Road in Gretna. He since has moved out.
Johnson was charged with misdemeanor child abuse as well as possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia
Johnson’s eldest son, Tavis Johnson, was charged with possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and was released.
The youngest son was placed in foster care.
The father, who is out on bail, is expected back in court next month.
Now I’m not going to tell adults what to do when they are watching our show. I find nothing shameful about adults wishing to show the world they are harmless marijuana smokers. But do realize that what you’re doing and writing can be used as evidence against you in a court proceding – it is a PUBLIC forum and you have no reasonable expectation of privacy.
I won’t smoke on cam. I have no kids to worry about, no job I would lose, and I don’t worry about officers of the state bursting into my home because there may be some cannabis here. However, I am a caregiver in the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program and smoking in public would mean the end of my card and open me up to prosecution. I’m also representing NORML and the millions of us who can’t or won’t speak up to end adult marijuana prohibition. I’d prefer that folks didn’t smoke on cam and made the chat room an inviting place for people new to the community, but that’s a personal decision you have to make as a guest – how do you want us to look to the mainstream?

I second that nomination.
Wow I missed the past couple of days. I can appreciate the novelty/fun of smoking on cam but I agree. The world is watching us and we need to this a friendly place for all (This includes how we speak to each other not just the ladies.)
We will en dover to improve
Thanks for keeping us in check
there’s a big difference between having a pot leaf hat and vacuuming smoke out of bong.
guess which one is less offensive…
OK, I can’t stay out of this one…
I back op what WUD and Karri said.
I’m not ashamed to rock the bong on cam but this may not be the best place.
An occasional rip should be OK especially if it shows responsible use by adults.
Maybe this is a chance to involve some dedicated Stashers.
Russ is very busy and Kerri is way into the chat, how about a CAM moderator? This person could actually server several needs.
First, they could politely rotate the cams so that mare folks have a chance to participate, currently we have some folks who hold a cam spot for 2-3 hours at a time.
This person could help Russ in the future if he starts doing interviews via the cams.
OR, we could have Special Guest Cams. Celebs from the MJ world who want to join in on the fun. This could draw a bunch of new traffic. Imagine if SnoopDogg sent a tweet saying he was going to be our guest for the hour….
Lastly this Moderator could give the BOOT to those folks who clearly cant play nice.
I nominate Hippy to the job!
Well, I guess it’s not the show for you. Good thing you won’t be there anymore, huh?
“like comments like what Bra size from yesterday show, Big No No, we have to watch that!” This is standard for stickam look at almost any stream on there.
@Russ – A big fat sober white guy with a marijuana leaf on his head. THATS the image I want to project to the mainstream.
I second WakeUpDead’s comment. As for me, you probably wont ever see me on the cams…I get what I want out of the show with the chat. I havn’t been able to be on with the show because of my new semester schedule, and have been missing out on the larger scale chats. I am appalled however at some of the behavior that has been mentioned. For those responsible: Cut it out! We are a political movement here NOT a party crew.
I believe that MH has been setting an appropriate example. He has been very careful NOT to expose a child to secondhand smoke.
Very well put WUD. Although I am for people toking whenever they want and not being ashamed about it, we still have to think about how more mainstream people see NORML people and some of them are made uncomfortable seeing a whole bunch of people smoking in cams thinking that maybe we all just sit in front of the cam all day and toke away. OBVIOUSLY this is untrue but people tend to see things and blow it up into things bigger and worse.
Just my two cents here as well….WUD – thanks for your comments. To the Mom that wants to dial in and see what we are about, the rude comments to the women who show up are often a deal breaker. There are some fine chat rooms w/ web cams for smoking with some cool new strangers. I will miss coming into some or your homes and hanging out for the few hours, but I would hate for these cams to turn into “bait” either for the authorities to hassle anyone, or god forbid part of some lawsuit, or for the prohibitionists to use against our cause. Thanks everyone for your great questions and lively chat everyday – we will keep tweaking this show and the technology that brings it to you until we have the best experience for everyone.
YES, thank god, you said it, we have to show a responsible Adult consumption isnt a bunch of guys siting around on Cams smoking away. We have to set the stage for when people outside the activist or consumer community comes to the show to learn and get educated, they dont want to see the typical crap that is always said about potheads, they want to learn and thats it.
Along with the smoking on cams, I get it it was fun the first day but now I havent been on everyday for the full 3 hrs smoking away just calm down and realize we are setting the stage for a national radio show that could some day lead this nation to ending this failed policy by educating the public about the truth, we dont want to scare folks away that are just there to look or learn.
Lastly, GUYS, stop jumping all over the women that show up, like comments like what Bra size from yesterday show, Big No No, we have to watch that! We need women in our movement more than you will lever know, so lets not scare them off please. Calm down guys, we all have seen pretty girls on cams doing much more than smoking a joint or sitting for an hr listening to Russ, Or maybe you havent had internet for the last 10 years! Leave the women alone guys, let them learn and be a part of the group dont scare them away, sometimes you all act like a bunch of teens wetting themselves when they show up on the cams! Geez men, step up to the plate here, not revert into children!
i was thinking of the chat as more for people already supporting legalization rather than a place for us to project an image to the mainstream but its interesting to consider.
