ONDCP's "High Gamer" Ad Campaign - Click to see for yourself!

Only the people who brought you Stoners in the Mist could think of an anti-marijuana ad campaign that tells kids smoking pot will make you bad at video games.  Hello?  This is in the same irony league as the maker of Pop Tarts firing the world’s greatest athlete for being a stoner.

highgamer2

I’m not a video game player myself (I work on computers, I don’t want to play on one), but maybe some gamers out there can tell us in the comments how much pot has ruined their video games skills.

    … ask any stoner …
We kick ass at video games when we are high!
I kick ass at video games that I cant play when i’m sober.

  2. BigDoug says:

All I have to say is, Get me stoned and challenge me to a game of Halo, Acording to my friends when I am High playing Halo its like watching Scarface play, Except I am telling people they are about to die in my Arnold voice and they say although the voice is funny it just reminds them thyat there time for living is almost up.

However I agree with others above, if you smoke to much, You are rendered useless, Although I have not found that breaking point yet.

  3. Carpe Cannabis says:

HA! This is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while. SOCOM II on my PS2 is paused right now so I can respond to this ignorance. All my friends are stoners, and they’re all gamers as well. The biggest difference is enjoyment.(Which, if I remember correctly, was the reason games were made.) Games, simply, are just more fun while high.

Generally it depends on how high you are and what genre of game your playing., but unless your immobile from smoking, then your performance is pretty good.

Sports games (like Madden ‘09) are amazing while high, and your probably unbeatable.

RPGs (like world of warcraft) aren’t really affected by smoking, other than trying to figure out puzzles, which smoking makes easier.

1st person shooters (like SOCOM II or Call Of Duty) are the only games that COULD be harder while smoking. Reflexes aren’t affected much since games are only played with a few fingers. Also, you don’t loose focus as easily when high. It sounds odd, but think about how psyched you get about the simplest projects or events. Sober, you just start going through the motions, and don’t notice small things happen. The only time your really below par, is while playing online, and it still isn’t that bad. Communication skills are probably the most affected in this area.

They can show facts proving some functions are diminished during high gameplay, but people would have trouble determining a high person’s performance from a sober person’s.

I agree with what has been said already. A moderate dose can get you in the zone, helping you screen out everything going on outside of the game, not to mention it makes it way more fun. Too much and you get tired and a bit disoriented.

    Munchies can also be distracting.

Just recently I decided to play through half-life as Gordon Freeman the stoner, shooting his way through black mesa and smoking up all the scientists along the way.

  5. dnL says:

Are you kidding me?! Pot’s like a gamers’ spinach. Back in college, I used to have a roommate/best friend that was a fairly good player when he was sober but after toking he was freakin’ unstoppable. All of us would sit around, get baked, and watch this guy own people on Gears of War, Halo 3, Madden, and others. I’ve smoked and played too but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it makes me a better or worse gamer, I don’t think it affects me at all.

This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard come from the ONDCP. They must be desperate.

  7. radman32 says:

First person shooters and fighting games are way funner when high, but no complex rts’s … that’s my spill

  8. Tobias says:

Simply put, COD 4 or halo 3 defiantly pull you in after a toke. if anyone out there thinks they can beat me 1 on 1, bring it! :-D

  9. Adoravivi says:

I actually mad an account just to state my opinion on this topic.

I like to play first person shooters on the XB360.

My K/D spread (Kill to Death ratio) while uninfluenced is slightly negative. It is normally .7 or .9. My K/D spread while under the influence of alcohol is about .3 or so. However, my K/D spread while high is about 1.3 to 2.0. 8-)

  10. moldy says:

I’m not a big gamer (or even a little one) but I play some old peoples’ games once in awhile and I usually kick the old ladys fanny after I’ve had a bowl or two. But if I go over the stupid limit then I’m done for! :-(

  11. Chris says:

ha Marijuana makes me better at videogames, it gives me patience while keeping me cool in the thickest of situations.

  12. ozarkman says:

I’m 44 year old gamer. I do just about everything high. But I must agree with Rob. If I don’t smoke too much I seem to get in the zone of the game. If I smoke too much I just don’t seem to focus well on the game.

For me though I cant drink and play. One drink slows me down.

I’m a big Call of Duty fan. Hope to kill ya on the battlefield soon!

  13. Rob says:

For me, I guess we’re brought back to the famous question, “how high?” A little bit greatly enhances my game playing abilities. I become much more focused and lose myself in what I’m playing. When I consume a larger quantity, though, I just find myself more easily distracted by other things going on and I get sleepy.

When I used to play racquetball 3-4 times a week, most of the time I would smoke a little beforehand. It allowed me to much better focus on the ball and I was better able to predict where I needed to be in order to hit it well. I saw it as a performance enhancing drug, if you will :-)

  14. josh says:

I find that weed actually makes me better at videgames. For example one time I was stuck in a game and had no idea what to do, but when I played it later when I was stoned out my mind,I actaually made it through that same part. All I had to do was think outside the box, and guess what? Pot is perfect for that and truly makes you BETTER at videgames that don’t rquire fast reaction time.

  15. Gavin says:

Playing video games is usually a bit more difficult high. Cannabis generally causes me to be in a sort of general state of confusion and information overload when I am playing games.

    However

Playing games is one of the most entertaining things to do high. The confusion I mentioned earlier adds another level of challenge, wonder, and excitement. Parts of games that are normally boring suddenly become awesome, and I tend to have a greater sense of accomplishment too.

Being high when you play games may make you worse, but it makes the game more fun.

  16. David says:

Funny, I told my wife recently how much cannabis use actually helps me to focus on what I’m doing when playing games like Call of Duty, Left 4 Dead or Super Mario Galaxy or any other number of video games that I play. It’s one of my main hobbies.

Cannabis has never negatively impacted my ability to play video games. If anything, it gives me hyper focus and I do better, plus I just enjoy it a lot.

Sorry, ONDCP, you lost me again on that one. Try again later?

  17. Bob says:

I am a poker player and mostly play online. Playing skillful poker requires a lot of thinking, decision making, and memory especially when you’re playing with people that you have played with in the past you have to remember how they play and use it to your advantage. When I use cannabis and play I don’t find that my play is affected in a negative way at all.

Besides…shouldn’t the kids be spending more time outside of the house?
