Facts about new synthetic drugs K2 or Spice
No, not that K2, the world's second-highest mountain... but since we mentioned highest...
Federal authorities in Philadelphia seized parcels of a new drug containing synthetic cannabinoids at a UPS shipping facility last week. Users seek a marijuana-like high with the ability to pass a standard drug test. Technically they are fully legal and with no current prohibitions. The various preparations of these chemical cannabinoid substitutes are sold as “Spice” or “K2.”
The article also reports that on Jan. 6th a small shipment of the ingredient that is the main synthetic cannabinoid in these new drugs, JWH-018, was also seized in Philadelphia.
JWH-018 has been found in legally marketed products around the world lately.
PhillyNORML spoke with two leading cannabinoid experts to find out more.
Jahan Marcu recently published a landmark study highlighting the effect of pure cannabinoids on gliomas or brain cancers. Currently conducting research at Temple University he is one of the few cannabinoid scientists in America. He was familiar with Spice.
“When we see these things starting to appear in designer drugs or herbal [products] it is a concern because not much is known about these compounds. They are very new and are used to test receptor function.”
Paul Armentano is the Deputy Director of national NORML and a respected author on the topic of cannabinoids. We spoke with him yesterday. Paul explained that the frontal lobe of the brain has a dense concentration of CB1 cannabinoid receptors. The JWH-018 and other synthetic cannabinoids are likely activating those receptors.
Armentano is also an expert on drug testing. Natural marijuana uses the delta-9-THC molecule mainly to produce the high, thus standard drug screens only look for THC metabolites. “You could create some test for these synthetic cannabinoids,” Armentano said.

i just have to a question for all the people who hate the stuff because its synthetic. Did you start smoking weed because it was natural and medicinal, or because a friend of yours had a joint and was like “you want some of this shit?”
the more people that smoke this stuff, the more the government will understand how many people just want some legal weed. and maybe fix the situation were in.

It seems to me that this whole mess of Synth Regulation wouldn’t have come about were it not for the whole mess of Organic Regulation.
Personally, I’m an advocate of God’s Green Earth – I love my weed, the culture, the flavors, the smells, the highs, the medical usefulness – the whole shot.
I’ve got to admit that I have doubts about Synth because 1) it IS synthetic, man-made, 2) it hasn’t been around long enough to look at detailed info like long-term effects, potential for addictive quality, etc.
Weed HAS been around for centuries, probably millenia, HAS been shown to be harmless, IS enjoyable with no particular worries – and you KNOW what’s in the bag.
Not advocating illegal drug use. Okay, maybe I am. Point being, if Marijuana were legal, if I didn’t have to pass the prejudice of a drug screen for a simple (non-hazardous) job, I’d be smoking that insteat. Now I am pressed to resort to the Synth that I don’t fully trust, even if it IS damned tasty and enjoyable.
Long story short, as long as people keep banning the goods, people will be pressured to invent new and use more questionable products. When alcohol was banned during prohibition, we reverted to moonshine and rotgut bathtub gin. We were smart enough to lift the prohibition, seeing as how people were dying or going blind from bad product.
I’m about at the point where I’d like to legalize everything and let Karma/God/All That Is sort it out.

The other day a friend and I went for an adventure in the forest, the good adventures usually start out this way. As we hiked in I stopped to discuss fishing holes with a group of fishermen in a friendly manner then began to carry on my way. With my back turned and heading up the trail, one of the fishermen said the thing we despise to hear, “cops, cops, cops.” The swine, were pulling into the parking area as we strolled. We scurried down the way to escape, we passed a group of people sunning themselves on the rocks drinking beer. As I passed them I informed them of the evil approaching from behind. Unfortunately they didn’t heed my warning and soon enough the pig was carrying them off while my friend and I watched helplessly hidden atop a boulder above the trail they were on. So these kids, were just out having fun, and this jackass had to arrest the poor guys. Its wrong!, Well, the cops knew we were there but just couldn’t find us. We sat quietly watching the swine hunt back and forth for us grumbling as they went oblivious to the fact that we were watching their asses. Common fact is pigs dont hike, they are incredibly lazy creatures whos jobs are the result of mindless bureaucracy. So getting out in the woods is great for escaping the matrix & getting outside the artificial lines fools draw for you.
While this was going on we both got drunk & smoked a packet of herb blended with a synthetic cannabinoid discussing how messed up it was for the cops to arrest those kids as the song ” the move – night of fear” played in my minds ear. We sat and waited for the “super cop” to go away and stop being a terrorist. That is what they were doing terrorizing us as we simply wanted to sit on the rocks, get stoned, drunk, and watch water droplets glisten off the bodies of pretty young girls in the sun. Instead we are trapped in the woods our entrance to freedom blocked, like rabbits our hearts beating with true fear. Knowing fully well that if caught we would be carried off to a communist gulag jail, a place built off the suffering and misery of mankind whos only purpose is to punish people for stepping out of line with the will of the corrupt powers that be. Carried there by the henchmen thugs of those corrupt powers that be, those hired killers known as the police.
