As you know, many states have reduced penalties for marijuana possession. At the federal level, I do not think the current democrat-controlled Congress is likely to legalize marijuana.
According to the National Institutes of Health, “the short-term effects of marijuana can include problems with memory and learning; distorted perception; difficulty in thinking and problem solving,” while long term use can produce “changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term abuse of other major drugs.” Heavy use has been associated with “depression, anxiety, and personality disturbances,” lower grades and graduation rates, and “increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers’ compensation claims, and job turnover.” As a physician, I can personally attest to the harmful effects of smoking and do not think Congress should encourage wide-spread use of marijuana.

As a proud resident of Louisiana. I’m ashamed of this jerk. He got voted in because he’s against abortion, we have ppl that are single issue voters that don’t like to think. What he’s doing is repeating the science daddy’s lies from the 1930’s that made it illegal to begin with. We need to start a petition so we can let the ppl vote on it. We need to stand together. When election time comes we need to vote this jerk out, he’s against the herb, so we need to be against him. Who will stand with me against this ignorant so-called doctor?
I forgot who’s gubernment it was! Must be the weed. . .NOT! We have science on our side, and now the AMA to some small extent. Tides have turned slowly over the years, though I’d like to see it change by tomorrow. We’ll have to just keep picking away, besides we’re not going away any time soon! Hell, I’m not asking Unkle Sam to admit that they have been wrong for many years. I just want to be free is all I ask.
I just finished reading the six new posts of senator’s/representative’s thoughts on marijuana/hemp and I am deeply saddened by the ignorance of our elected officials. The use of terms like “dangerous drug” and “unalterably opposed to the legalization of marijuana” cannot be tolerated when so much research and data shows that legalization and regulation of marijuana is the only logical choice.
