Topics: California, Politicians on Pot, Rep. Duncan Hunter, RepublicanThank you for contacting me with your support for H.R.2835, the Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act. I appreciate the opportunity to respond to you on this issue.
As you may be aware, marijuana is a Scheduled I substance under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. Marijuana was placed in this most restricted category because it was found to have a high potential for abuse, has no currently accepted medical use in the U.S. and lacks accepted Safety standards for use.
While I have heard the arguments for using marijuana for medicinal reasons, I am also aware of the availability of other legal drugs that can better treat the symptoms allegedly alleviated by marijuana. I believe doctors and medical professionals, in consultation with their patients, should be making medical treatment decisions, however, doctors are limited to prescribing drugs that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers to be safe for their intended use. The FDA, which uses rigorous scientific studies to determine the safety of a proposed drug, does not consider marijuana to be safe or effective. You may refer to the FDA’s statement on medicinal marijuana at:
http://www.fdagov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/2006/ucm108643.htm
There are ongoing studies on the toxicology of marijuana and cannabis but there are currently no peer-reviewed studies that have proven the safety of marijuana use for either recreational or medicinal use. The American Medical Association recommends that marijuana remain a Schedule I controlled substance and a recent study at the Mayo Clinic showed that THC (tetrahydrocannabional) was less effective than standard treatments in helping cancer patients regain lost appetites. As the father of three, I also believe allowing the medical use of marijuana sends the wrong message to our children that using this drug poses no risk and is harmless. Additionally, legalizing marijuana would only make it that much more difficult for our law enforcement to distinguish between medical and recreational users.
The Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act would prevent federal authorities from prosecuting pharmacies, growers and users of medical marijuana in states that have legalized use for medical reasons. Rest assured that while we may disagree on this issue, I will keep your specific thoughts firmly in mind as Congress continues to discuss this important issue.
Again, thank you for contacting me. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Sincerely,
Duncan Hunter
Member of Congress

My name is Joe Ryan. I am running against Duncan Hunter as an Independent in the 52nd district. If elected I would vote to not only decriminalize marijuana completely, but I would work very hard to get blanket pardons for person in jail for possessing or selling marijuana. I am wary of legalize and tax proposals because the tax avoidance penalties that might apply to persons caught with ‘unofficial’ marijuana (bags without a tax stamp) would probably dwarf current possession penalties. If we start putting people in jail for 6 months for tax evasion because they get caught with a little bud, we are going backwards. The proposal from a California legisaltor adds a $50 tax to each ounce of marijauna. Since many people smoke weed that costs less than $50 an ounce, their would still be a black market for marijuana after such a law passed. Medicine that can be safely grown at a place of residence, or similar property, without undue environmental damage occurring, should not be subject to any tax or other regulation whatsoever. I refuse to accept contributions from anyone. So I need volunteers willing to help me defeat Duncan Hunter. I can win without money. Please contact me if you have time this year to help. Thanks. Joe Ryan joeryan@joeryanforcongress.com
I hope NORML makes a “list” of these idiots (liars) so we can vote their distasteful asses out of office.
You’re aware of “other legal drugs” probably because the pharmaceutical industry has made you aware of them and how they’re “better”.
Mr Hunter you are dead wrong…..I have been taking pills, 20 t 30 per day for 2 years for my end stage (4th stage) liver with portal hypertention and have had 3 heart attacks….I smoke my legally bought herbs that have done what no pill was able to do….I am at peace now, I smile and watch my grandchildren grow and know ever minute I have left will be joyful! I now take 7 pills a day and Iam hanging in there…UCSD may not have a liver for me as I am too far down the list but someone there gave me the card of a physician that could help me…that wrote me a perscription….
thank you voters of California….and Mr. Hunter you need to talk to MORE people and get your head straight on what the voters of California want.

Something we can be thankful for: this idiot makes the egregious error of printing his atrocious attitude out and sending it to his constituents…now he can be officially Nuttsacked! This showcases the ignorance of Rep. Hunter and his ilk, let’s use what they give us…
I’m sure there are plenty of Californian NORML-izers far more eloquent than I, yet equally if not more outraged by this heartless, hard-line prohibitionist stance, who can respond to this teabagger’s remorseless rhetoric by rebutting him in public forums rather than uselessly debating the windbag himself, be it in person or via email, snail mail, etc. He may change his future written views, but we have a record now of his true thoughts and agenda.
If we are to replace these moralistic meatheads with lawmakers who reflect our views, we need to disseminate far and wide both the questions that were righteously and rightfully submitted, and the respective moralistic agenda-driven replies. How to go about it? Letters to editors, for one, can shed light on the way these lawmakers think. Newspapers and other media are increasingly willing to print and otherwise publicize these types of blatant misrepresentations.
These blowhards may not change their tune, but if we can expose their treachery to their constituency it will be more likely that come election day, the electorate’s views will be more accurately reflected by their elected representatives.
It’s a never-ending war that they will continue to wage, but when the enemy hands you his battle plan, you run with it. (to the local paper or other news outlet)
The responses so far that I’ve seen posted this week from elected officials are mostly negative, they just recite what they’ve been told to say. That’s too bad.
your legal drugs SUCK Hunter…….
