Marijuana is a very dangerous drug and the legalization of it is a controversial issue. Our nation is looking for ways to prevent our young people smoking cigarettes while also dealing with the enormous health costs associated with long-term smoking. If we were to simultaneously eliminate society’s attempts to restrict marijuana smoking, we would be sending mixed messages to our young people and encouraging an expensive as well as destructive habit. It is also very dangerous for anyone attempting to drive on our streets, operate hazardous equipment, or pilot public transportation such as commercial aircraft while under the influence of mind altering drugs. The rights and protections to our society always need to be weighed with individual rights to engage in destructive behavior.

Mr. Zach Wamp , Sir if your going to offer some information at least make it true and correct! As for smoking marijuana versus cigarettes there is no comparison. As proven to the Head of CIA marijuana causes no harmful damage to the lungs Nor has there ever been a person die from cancer because of this herb for centuries. Yet cigarettes which is not a pure herb but one with added chemicals which has caused numerous medical conditions ( all bad) of which you and your congress has yet to stop their sales, so your contradicting yourself in arguments? I also see no indifference between consumption of any other chemical or drink that there is a time and place for each of them and if people are at work or operating machinery they should be punished!
Facts are marijuana has been found scientifically to help certain medical conditions. Not to mention the herb has other uses from fuel to clothing. Hemp has been used for centuries even in America’s history. Our government used to have people grow it in the early days which was used as currency. Your fear of this herb is not one based on truths or facts. Marijuana can be used even to day to help those get off man made chemicals with major side affects to one with little to no side affects. Not to mention this plant would be a whole lot cheaper to produce. Im sure like with most things its scary but in the end the profits for government would be great. Aiding the states who are suffering because of the poor infrastructure and lack of federal funds. I know there would be some downfalls but in the end its worth legalizing.
