Asleep at the Wheel has been around since the 70′s with their county swing sound. They have won nine Grammy Awards and have released more than twenty studio albums. They began their climb up the ladder of success with help from two well established artists. In 1973, Van Morrison mentioned them in a Rolling Stone magazine article, and that recognition led to a record deal with United Artists, then in 1974, at the request of Willie Nelson, the band moved from Oakland, California to Austin, Texas. Over the next few decades, Asleep At The Wheel’s sound became the standard for Texas country swing. They have been guests on the PBS series, ‘Austin City Limits’ a record-setting ten times, and have been named as the Best Country Western Band by Rolling Stone Magazine. They have played with almost every country music great over the last four decades. In February of 2009, front man Ray Benson collaborated with Willie Nelson to release, “Willie and the Wheel”, an album we featured here on the stash. That album was nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award for Best Americana Album. This latest offering from country music’s greats, “It’s a Good Day!” was just released, and has two tracks on the album that feature Willie Nelson. Willie is on NORML’s advisory board, has worked for cannabis legalization for years. He seems to be the one guy that has been able to share his love of the herb with the masses, and yet remain loved by fans, including those that might never have considered marijuana as more than an illegal street drug. I am proud to offer the latest Asleep at the Wheel single, “Truck Driver’s Blues” with the most recent of Willie Nelson’s music to hit the airwaves.
