Thank you for contacting me to express your views about the use of illegal drugs.
We must provide our law enforcement community with adequate resources to combat the use and sale of illegal drugs. I have been a strong supporter of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program that fights crime through community partnership and engagement programs. It has enabled Florida law enforcement agencies to put over 7,000 new officers on the street. The COPS program also has helped State and local police purchase new crime fighting technologies, including equipment to assist them in the war on drugs. In addition, I am pursuing funding for Florida’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA). HIDTA is a unique partnership between Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies to reduce trafficking in areas where this problem is most severe. I believe these programs should be expanded. More also should be done to reduce the demand for illegal drugs through education and rehabilitation
Additionally, I cosponsored the Combat Meth Act, which makes it more difficult to produce and traffic methamphetamines. The bill includes funding to train law enforcement officials and prosecutors while providing funds for education, prevention, and treatment programs.
I appreciate your sharing your concerns with me. Your communication helps me serve you better in the Senate.
Sincerely,
Senator Bill Nelson

It’s funny how Florida is in a state of delusional denial about how to go about solving the country’s marijuana problems. IFirst of all…if you’ve never done drugs, you should not allowed to hold political office. Only someone who has gone through the motions before can truly understand where people are coming form. Not rich snobbish fancy lads who had all their good fortune inherited and have never stepped off their porch into the real world before. People should read a book called Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions. In it it will explain to you that if you are a person seeking to help other, you must have gone through what they have, not armchair theorized about it. A leader is one who can empathize, not sympathize. BIll Nelson is a sham, and should be shot outside the governors mansion on live television.
if you’re in florida, and registered to vote, get onboard with the effort to get the medical mj initiative on 2010′s ballot. i got nearly 20 petition signers over thanksgiving. it’s certainly not the solution i’d prefer but it is a step in the right direction and gets the public thinking a bit more rationally about mmj and perhaps drugs in general.
but if i had my choice i’d be moving to northern cali or oregon in a heartbeat…florida is just bizarre.
Keep writing your letters brett. We can change the way things are and we are winning.
Good luck with Florida even “considering” any rational policy regarding marijuana, medical or otherwise. I don’t mean to be negative or cynical, but I’m certainly skeptical…
It seems most of the legislators from this beautiful state have cold ugly hearts hell-bent on not only perpetuating prohibition but expanding law-enforcement budgets with “technologies” that will eventually leave no one with any right to privacy.
Gee More Cops More Money bigger “programs” court ordered rehab and probation drug testing. but more more more OF THE SAME is what he is telling us.
Im so sick of these legislators playing the hard on drugs stance, to me it should be a clear sign that they dont have the puublic intreasts at heart they just want elected. Throw more money and people at the problem, well that hasnt worked for the last 72 years, when will it be too much, too much money, too much cost of life JUST too many lives ruined all for a impossible goal, a Drug Free USA?
Its not going to happen, it didnt happen for 5000+ years prior to prohibition and it wont long after they end it and they will end it when the people of this nation finaly see the light and relize the violence and corruption prohibition brings is far worse than any damage the drugs themselves do.
This guy is a tool of the old system and needs removed at all cost. If these guys cant start seeing and speeking the truth then they need to go and we as a movement have the power to make that happen we just need to do it.
Sorry this letter really pissed me off, just the lack of knowlage and concern he shows, its sick to think he has no idea the amount of money wasted and lives ruined, Hes a TOOL!
i’m not sure what to make of this… I live in Florida which is “considering” medical Marijuana programs.
I’ve contacted this guy among others, never got a reply.
I hope Florida will open their eyes like the other 14 states did.
