Thank you for contacting me to express your support for legalizing the use of marijuana. I appreciate your taking the time to do so.
I noted your concerns. You may, however, be interested to know that studies have linked marijuana use to lung disease, and chronic marijuana smoking may harm the cardiovascular system and possibly the immune and reproductive systems. Studies also suggest a correlation between pregnant women who use the drug and low-birth weight babies. It also is well established that marijuana intoxication can adversely affect a person’s coordination and impair motor and decision-making skills. For these reasons, I have serious concerns about the legalization of marijuana. but I will keep your views in mind.
Again, thank you for contacting me.
Sincerely,
Susan M. Collins
United States Senator
Remember to contact your United States Senators and Congressperson and tell them you want to see marijuana legalized (or medical marijuana or decrim or hemp) and send in their responses to stash@norml.org with the subject Politicians on Pot.
By the way, for those of you keeping score, Senator Collins’ response rates 4.09 Anslingers.

Does this mean that she supports prohibition for alcohol and tobacco, too? If one was to compare study results, I think ‘may harm’ and ‘suggest a correlation’ will not be sufficient to justify the consensus that these legal drugs are very harmful to people’s bodies.
“It also is well established that marijuana intoxication can adversely affect a person’s coordination and impair motor and decision-making skills.”
Compared to alcohol intoxication, CAN is the keyword there.
Senator Collins, either you are lying about marijuana and lung disease or are deeply misinformed, as well as chronic use associated with cardiovascular disease and immune functions. It also seems logical that pregnant women shouldn’t indulge in any intoxicant, yet alcohol and tobacco are still legal. This also applies to motor skills and decision-making. It’s irresponsible to cherry-pick what to prohibit despite the evidence.
Yup, both Maine’s Republicans (Collins and Snowe) and Pennsylvania’s Specter were the only Republican votes in both the House and Senate for spending taxpayer money intended to fix the economy and infrastructure of America.
There were more than three Republican votes to spend taxpayer money intended to fix the economy and infrastructure of Iraq.
Just sayin’.
