PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakotans will be asked to vote on legalizing marijuana for use in treating pain, nausea and other health problems.
The secretary of state’s office has approved a petition seeking a statewide vote on the proposal in November.
A similar measure narrowly failed in the 2006 election, when it received 48 percent of the vote. But [activists say] support for medical marijuana has grown among South Dakotans in the past few years.

Marijuana Law Reform in 2010 (March Update)
Kudos to SoDakNORML, Bob Newland, Emmett Reistroffer, and all the activists in South Dakota who worked so hard to collect 30,000 signatures (16,776 valid signatures are required).
When South Dakota passes medical marijuana, after having been the only state to have failed at a citizen initiative to pass medical marijuana (48% in 2006), we will have shown undeniably that support for medical marijuana is increasing all over the United States and not just in the West and Northeast.
