Emerging in the latter half of the 90′s, Sizzla Kalonji is one of the most prolific leaders of the conscious Reggae dancehall movement. Sizzla has released over 45 impressive solo albums and over fifteen combination albums, crossing different genres of Reggae. The number of mix tapes on the street are countless.

Kalonji, as a member of of the Bobo Ashanti Rastafarians, is aggressive in his condemnations of slavery, inhumane acts, and Western Oppressors. Overall his music is generally positive, advocating faith, compassion for poor black youth, and respect for women. He remains something of an enigma to the public at large, rarely granting interviews and keeping his concert appearances to a minimum. Nonetheless, he still ranks as arguably the most popular conscious reggae artist of his time.

Known as a reggae artist with a nontraditional range of influences, DaddyRoots (also known as zKing of Hearts) took his unorthodoxy to a new level by releasing the album Happiness (Is In Your Heart) which crossed his beloved irie with dance, electronica, and pop.

“Weedy Wop” — from that album — is a club mix using bouncy, old-school dance to create the ultimate marijuana party anthem. There is no level of stoned, no strain so relaxing, to stop a body from moving to this first-rate celebratory declaration of herbal healing and nonstop fun.

A Caribbean superstar from Anguilla in the British West Indies, DaddyRoots is known for his live performances and has toured all over the US, Canada, Europe, Africa, and Asia. In 2006, he won Best Male Reggae Vocalist at the 16th Los Angeles Music Awards. In addition to regular non-commercial radio play in the US and videos on heavy rotation in the Caribbean’s MTV Tempo, his songs and vocal compositions have been used in American and Canadian film and television productions. Collaborations include vocals for Magic Soul Orchestra’s “Compressor”, used in popular iPhone game “Tap, Tap, Dance.”

I love the interesting, and today on the stash, KUSH ARORA brings us some experimental Ragga music with today’s stash hit, “Weed Control”.  When the US and Europe were falling in love with the synthesizer and carving out electronic dance music, our friends in Jamaica were giving birth to Ragga music, the electronic child of Reggae. Kush Arora blends Indian music, reggae and his own quirky version of dancehall to create a lush new sound in Dancehall Dub.
