marijuana-unicornMoney… get back… I’m alright Jack, keep your hands off my stack… Article after article keep trickling across the news desk about states cutting their budgets in this economic crisis, desperate to trim wasteful spending, motivated to search for creative new revenue streams…  So, congratulations, Ulysses the Marijuana Unicorn, official mascot of those incarcerated for simple, first-time, non-violent marijuana possession, you now have a friend — Elliott the Legalization Elephant!

elephantOn today’s Daily Audio Stash we get a double dose of Cannabis Science.  Dr. Mitch Earleywine is here to talk about that study I brought up yesterday showing that marijuana users were less likely to get injured than alcohol drinkers.  Then Dr. Lester Grinspoon, a pioneering physician in the field of medical marijuana and author of Marijuana Reconsidered and Marijuana: The Forbidden Medicine, joins us to talk about his new web ventures (you’ve seen the ad banners) and the progress of medical marijuana since he began his research in the 1960s.

    Happy Dr. Lester Grinspoon Day

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 at 10:58 am | By: Radical Russ

Every community has its own holidays, and the cannabis community is no different. Even the mainstream is a ware of our biggest holiday, 4/20, but fewer know about today’s day of tribute to Dr. Lester Grinspoon.

Lester Grinspoon is Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the author of several drug-related books, including Marijuana Reconsidered, Psychedelic Drugs Reconsidered, and Marijuana: The Forbidden Medicine.

Marijuana Reconsidered came out in the 1970s as Nixon was beginning the War on Drugs and the counterculture had popularized marijuana.  Much of the same reefer madness about pot was going around then as it is now and few doctors knew anything about the real science behind medical marijuana.  Grinspoon originally endeavored to write Marijuana Reconsidered in order to build a case against marijuana, but as his research progressed, he realized the complexities of the plant and was moved to advocate for legalization.

Grinspoon also had a strong personal connection to the medical marijuana issue.  Grinspoon discussed the way marijuana helped his young son while he was dying from leukemia in the 1970s, completely eliminating the horrible nausea & vomiting he experienced after each of his chemotherapy treatments and, thereby, making the final year and a half of the boy’s life far more comfortable, for his son, and for Grinspoon and his wife by not having to endure the pain of witnessing their son suffer.

Over forty years now, Dr. Lester Grinspoon has been one of the most vocal and potent advocates for the end of adult marijuana prohibition.  Join us in celebrating one of the heroes of our movement.
