(JohnHartford.com) John Hartford won Grammy awards in three different decades, recorded a catalog of more than 30 albums, and wrote one of the most popular songs of all time, Gentle On My Mind.  He was a regular guest and contributor on the Glen Campbell Good Time Hour and the Smothers Brothers Show.  He added music and narration to Ken Burns’ landmark Civil War series, and was an integral part of the hugely popular “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack and Down From The Mountain concert tour.

An amazing artist and friend of the movement, Vic Chesnutt died on Christmas Day, 2009 and left behind legions of fans both famous and ordinary. Vic was a supporter of medical marijuana which helped him with his own medical problems that stemmed from injuries from a  1983 car accident when he was 19 years old. The accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. He had limited use of his hands and found he could play simple guitar chords. He went on to release seventeen albums in his career. A documentary of his life was released in 1992 called  “Speed Racer: Welcome to the World of Vic Chesnutt” and he played the role of “Terence” in Billy Bob Thornton’s movie, “Sling Blade”, but it was the music that he left behind that will be remembered long after we are all gone. Vic Chesnutt, much like Townes Van Zandt, was a legend among legends. He was a real musician’s musician. He collaborated with the likes of Michael Stipe and Patti Smith. If you don’t know his music, you might find yourself tripping down a rabbit hole through his large and largely unknown body of work.  Poignant and beautiful, humorous  and heartwrenching at times disturbing and other times  joyful. Vic Chesnutt’s music is raw and open and at the core it is pure truth.  It is all there for the lover of great folk music and the admirer of good old-fashioned rock and roll, well written  music with meaningful lyrics. I encourage you to visit his webpage, (vicchesnutt.com) and seek out his music. Even for hard-core fans there is something new to discover.  Vic contributed this song to the 1998 album Hempilation II, the proceeds of which went to NORML.

I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Weekend and are enjoying your short week towards the New Year! For decades now the cannabis that comes from Humboldt, California is the stuff legends are made of. We go to this rich fertile region for today’s toker-friendly tune by the Folk Duo “Two Smooth Stones” and their anthemic song “Free the Weed”. Two Smooth Stones is really Bill Holmes on vocals and rhythm guitar and James Mandich on guitar and harp. Today’s tune harkens back to the free-feeling sounds of the 60′s and 70′s that poured out of Northern California like a siren calling all the cool people to pack up, head out west and join the movement.  If you would like to hear more of their music, you can visit their myspace page.  They are also active in the blogosphere in Humboldt at highboldtage.com where you can find out all kinds of things about politics and music in the Northern California region.

Welcome back, Stashers!  I hope your Thanksgiving was chocked full of turkey, or tofurkey if you’re a vegan, or turbaconducken if you’re aiming for clogged arteries and an early death, and lots of, um … sacraments, let’s call them.

Oh, who am I kidding?  I hope you smoked yourself silly!

Who is that handsome redheaded man to the left, you ask?  Why, that’s me!  Now, I promise the Stash will never become a venue through which I will self-promote.  It is, and will always be, a showcase for artists across the country.

That being said, after hearing Chief Greenbud’s tune on the Stash last Wednesday, it made me realize that I wrote a holiday themed song about three years ago called “The Chrimmis Time Blues.”  It’s a silly song that’s somewhat pot-related, for a silly EP called Chrimmis Time! and has sat in the vault that is my computer’s hard drive ever since I wrote it.

And since it’s Monday and Monday = bluesday, I thought I’d play the song for you.  It’s nowhere near the caliber of Mr. Greenbud or any of the other music I’ve featured here, but it’s cute and funny and I think it will start off the holiday season (whatever that may be for you!) nicely.

“Transamerican” americana/folk band The Snake The Cross The Crown may have an obviously Biblical band name, but they sound nothing like Amy Grant or, uh … okay, I don’t know any other Christian band names.  I don’t even know if they are a Christian band.  They might be one of those “new Christian” type bands like MewithoutYou (and I guess, Pedro the Lion), who aren’t afraid to be Christian and write songs about Jesus, but aren’t as “in-your-face” as bands like, well, Amy Grant.  Or the other one.  You know the one I’m talking about.

Either way, if they are a Christian band, then they apparently understand the deep connection between spiritualism and getting high.  Their song, “The Great American Smokeout,” is a lovely little americana song about people who are struggling to get by, and with lyrics like, “She is thinking of her son’s demise/On his epitaph a doctor’s bill”, I immediately see images of poor, struggling cancer patients trying to pay for expensive medication when all they need is a little weed.

I guess what we really need is a Great American Smokeout!

Good day fellow Stashers! Today we get to play in some beautiful folk-genre-music with ASS – yes a funny name for a talented Swede. His musical name is really an acronym for Andreas Soderstrom Solo. Mr. Soderstrom has worked with different artists and must have a great sense of humor. Today’s cut, “And Pass it to Each Other” is from the album “My Get Up and Go Just Got Up and Went” which is a collection of acoustic guitar solos. This beautiful acoustic music is just what I needed when I realized it is only Tuesday, and Friday seems a bit far. Top O’ the day to ya! This is Cannabis O’Karri here wishing you a very green St. Patty’s Day! Today, usually blue Monday, I was feelin’ a wee bit of green instead, so here is some Irish music by the band, CELTIC TRIBE. These Irish rovers aim to inspire and enlighten, and that they do with today’s musical pint “Pipe of Inspiration”. The lads founded the band 1991 and they play all over the north of Ireland . So leave the Guinness at home, and pick up a pipe of inspiration of your own, or as they say in the homeland “roll a bifter” to celebrate this green holiday. Have a safe and fun holiday!
