Four Jumps of Jive

The Four Jumps of Jive was a quartet formed by Willie Dixon in late 1945, with Gene Gilmore, Bernardo Dennis, and Ellis Hunter. Their sound, a mix of R&B harmony vocal and blues, was getting them a serious following in Chicago and they might have gone on to a major recording career, but the group didn’t last long enough. They recorded for Mercury Records in the company’s early days, including “Satchel Mouth Baby” and “It’s Just the Blues”. Gilmore and Hunter left the group in 1946 and Leonard Caston — an old friend of Dixon’s — came into the lineup, which was christened the Big Three Trio, making pretty much the same kind of music as the Four Jumps of Jive for the next decade. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide.

JazzChronic, from the musical hotbed of Athens, GA plays original rock-funk injected jazz music that is reminiscent of funk organ and horn led bands of the late 70’s. JazzChronic creates high-energy music that is innovative, stimulating and brings a powerful musical experience for music fans everywhere.

The new album, Groovathon, is truly that, with funky tracks for phatty fans like “Groove Pimps”, “Gimme Some Green”, and “On the Grind”.  Today we set the groove to instrumental saxified jazz-funk with a jam called “Rollin’ Thick”.  It’s got a sound like somebody got Spyro Gyra really blazed and asked them to compose a soundtrack for a chase scene in a Cleopatra Jones flick.  You’d better roll a thick one to get into this Groovathon with JazzChronic and “Rollin’ Thick”.

(RedHotJazz) Trixie Smith was born in Atlanta, Georgia and is reported to have studied at Selma University in Alabama. Sometime around 1915 she moved north to New York to work in show business. At first she worked in minstrel shows and on the TOBA vaudeville circuit. It was in vaudeville where she became a featured vocalist.

In 1922 Smith made her first recordings for the Black Swan label and later that year she won a blues singing contest in New York sponsored by the White dance team of Vernon and Irene Castle, beating out Lucille Hegamin and some other lesser known singers with her song “Trixie’s Blues”.

Smith is best remembered today for the excellent Jazz bands that accompanied her on her records. The records were often released under the name of Trixie Smith and her Down Home Syncopators, which was usually either Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra or the White group The Original Memphis Five.

Trixie recorded a fine session for Decca in 1938 that featured Sidney Bechet and an additional song in 1939, but her recording career had for all practical purposes ended by 1926 when she recorded with Jimmy Bythe and his Ragamuffins. As her career as a Blues singer waned, Smith returned to her theatrical roots and worked in musical revues, Broadway shows and appeared the four films. She died in 1943.

Welcome to hump day/hemp day on your daily stash. Today we have the AMPHIBEUS TUNGS with their feel good track, “Smoke that Feelen”. Maybe it’s because the Amphibeus Tungs are from Hawaii, but this hip hop track is as relaxing as Indica on a white sand beach. Or maybe it’s because this group has two Jays (two Jays are always better than one!). Founded by Beau Sun, Quest Eons and Doc. Platypus and welcoming turntabalists Pazess One and Jai Freedom Lewis with DJ Jay Peace Pipe and One Chef Strum, these guys groove just as much as they rhyme. I love the vibe that the Tungs lay down on this track, it is the perfect song to groove us through the week. This is one you will want to add to your basement party mix tape! Mahalo and Aloha!

Tom Morse

To start the new year off, today’s tune is a bluesy jazz-rich jam by Tom Morse of Memphis, Tennessee. Today’s song called, “Pipe Whipped” has a nice guitar line, some funky hand drums and a few lyrics that get lost in the grooviness. Morse started out playing in blues punk bands in a scene fostered by Memphis’ fabled Antenna Club. The Antenna club was closed 15 years ago, but is still celebrated as one of the first and probably the longest-lived punk oriented venues in America. The club installed TV screens along the walls that featured rock music videos, a novelty in 1981 before MTV was born. I don’t know what Tom Morse looked like in 1981, but here is a more current picture of him driving through the smokey mountains this last summer…..grooviness intact!

But, by 1980, D’Rivera was dissatisfied about the constraints placed on his music in Cuba, and longed to come to the United States where he would have the freedom to fully develop his talents and his career. In early 1981, while on tour in Spain, he sought asylum with the American Embassy, and left his homeland forever.

Upon his arrival in the United States, D’Rivera was helped by many people; in particular, Dizzy Gillespie, David Amram, Mario Bauza and Bruce Lundvall, who gave him first solo recording date. D’Rivera quickly earned respect among American jazz musicians and was introduced to the jazz scene at some of the most prestigious clubs and concert halls in New York.
