I think the moderator actually might have been trying to steer the President’s answer towards marijuana by adding that since Prop. 19 last fall in California, it’s more on people’s minds now. But former toker Barack didn’t bite. The following text is President Obama’s answer.

Legalization is a legitimate topic for debate? Great! Name the time and place. We’ve been prepping for this debate for forty years. Make it a televised two-hour debate with live online and call-in voting, a la American Idol. The ratings would be historic and you (not we) will be surprised by the results of the [...]

Warning: the following video shows federal agents a week ago engaging in an armed raid of an incredibly dangerous retail medical marijuana shop in Las Vegas. Pay close attention to the peril and risk faced by these brave law enforcers, protected only by goggles, flak jackets, body armor, riot shields, and automatic weapons. Those officers could very well have suffered a paper cut collecting all that paperwork!

At first read, this might sound like a good idea. Of course you’d want a person’s doctor to be the one they can go to if they have a problem with drug addiction. But when you start talking about detecting their drug use when that use subjects them to criminal penalties, especially within the federal healthcare system of the VA and people receiving Medicare and Medicaid assistance, you then create an incentive not to seek health care.

Of course, faithful NORML readers and most of the public know that cannabis metabolites can remain detectable in the urine for up to 100 days or longer for a regular cannabis consumer and up to fifteen days for the casual consumer, even after quitting cold turkey. Metabolites in urine don’t tell you a driver is actually impaired, they tell you someone used cannabis, but not when. Even the US Department of Transportation admits that a positive test for drug metabolites is “solid proof of drug use within the last few days, it cannot be used by itself to prove behavioral impairment during a focal event.”
