It’s Cannabis Science time! You know all those studies Dr. Earleywine and I talked about that purported a small segment of the adolescent population vulnerable to schizophrenia would suffer from a “cannabis induced psychosis”? Well, a new study is out showing that the entire concept of “cannabis induced psychosis” may be bunk and what’s really happening is that schizophrenics who would have suffered a psychotic episode anyway happen to have one while smoking cannabis. Rather than triggering mental illness, bad reactions to cannabis may instead be warning signs of mental illness. Dr. Earleywine joins us to look deeper into this revolutionary finding.
Then we go north of the border to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada to visit with one of its newly-elected city councillors, Philippe Lucas! Lucas, in addition to being an advocate for the homeless other social causes, works with the Vancouver Island Compassion Society (thevics.com) helping medical cannabis patients.

Fortin elected Victoria mayor
Victoria Coun. Dean Fortin fended off a tough challenge from businessman and rookie politician Rob Reid last night to become the city’s new mayor.
Fortin was leading by about 600 votes with 14 of 15 polls counted; he also has strong support at a new left-leaning council table.
Voters returned every candidate on the “Dean Team,” including incumbent councillors Pam Madoff and Sonya Chandler, as well as newcomers Lynn Hunter, John Luton and Philippe Lucas. Hunter is a former NDP MP, Luton is a cycling activist, and Lucas, like Chandler, is a member of the civic Green party.
Philippe is also a frequent guest on the Daily Audio Stash. Check out our interviews from July and April when we discussed his work with the Vancouver Island Compassion Society. He’s been my go-to guy on the subject of medical cannabis in Canada. It’s nice to see drug law reformers working to enact change from inside the system!

Today we visit with Philippe Lucas from the Vancouver Island Compassion Society. He fills us in on their lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Health Canada medical marijuana program, and explans the history of Ottawa’s reluctance to get involved with medical marijuana.
Aaron Smith from the Marijuana Policy Project joins us from Fresno, California. He’s promoting a screening of the documentary “Waiting to Inhale” near Fresno in an effort to educate the public and policymakers. Fresno is considering how to adopt the state-mandated ID card system for medical marijuana patients.
The screening is free and hill be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno at 2672 E. Alluvial Ave., Clovis, CA. The date is next Monday, July 7th, at 7pm, and following the screening is a panel discussion.
Also, you get to hear my spiced-up rendition of my ode to the DEA’s 35th birthday today.
So, it’s Canada Day, eh? Enjoy your NORML Daily Audio Stash!
