Music: Tallbrothers - “You Get Me Too High”

I love to start the weekend with my favorite BC buds, THE TALLBROTHERS. Today we enjoy the wonderful reefer jazz tune “You Get Me Too High”. Actual brothers, Thomas and Bill Small are the core of this legendary Vancouver, BC band. Bill helped launch the British Columbia Compassion Club Society that provides low-cost, high quality organic medicinal marijuana to anyone with a doctor’s prescription. Incredibly, Tom started writing music at the age of 8 and both brothers have a long musical resume. Currently taking their inspiration from 30’s and 40’s reefer tunes gleaned from the archives of Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and others, the Tallbrothers are THE sound of hot jazz in the cannabis community. According to their website, the band’s name comes from an old reefer jazz tune called “Man with the Jive” where a line exclaims “Light up baby and get real tall!” I hope you all have a chance to get real tall this weekend! Good Day beautiful stashers! Today we enjoy some great acoustic guitar with DALLAS LEONARD and his musical hit “One Toke”. Dallas is a Midwestern troubadour who has played in various rock bands and now is embracing his inner folkster by writing and performing his acoustic music. Welcome to Blue Monday stashers! We have heard from the band GILES before, but we haven’t heard them sing the blues! This tune, “Mind Your Own Damn Business” has a steady rockin’ blues beat with a real Monday- blue-Monday attitude. Giles is a guitar-driven trio from the North-West of England fronted by the talented Mark Koehorst who is originally from Holland. With his son, Piet on bass and Terry Shaughnessy on drums, I am beginning to think that Giles can play any genre and sound like they own it. Maybe I will drop them a line, and ask them to cook up their own version of reggae next. I have no doubt these guys would nail it. How do I conquer Mondays? AARON ENGLISH is an artist from Seattle and along with his band, bring us some big sounds reminiscent of Robert Plant, post Zeppelin or Peter Gabriel post Genesis. Today’s tune “Like Smoke” showcases his sophisticated writing style that is amplified by world-beat rhythms, making this Northwest band sound exotic and intoxicating. Actual brothers, Thomas and Bill Small head this legendary Vancouver, BC band. Bill at one time oversaw a mega real estate business and the stress from that job led to ulcers. When he discovered that marijuana had cured his ulcers, he moved to Vancouver and helped launch the British Columbia Compassion Club Society that initially operated out of his apartment. This organization provides low-cost, high quality organic medicinal marijuana to anyone with a doctor’s prescription. Tom has a long musical history, playing many different instruments in different musical genres and working as an audio engineer. Their retro sound is cool and crisp jazz at its best. After headlining the 2004 Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, the Tallbrothers gained worldwide popularity in cannabis communities far from their Canadian roots. Welcome beautiful stashers! Often the difference between a great strain of cannabis and a really great strain of cannabis is a cool name. I fondly remember my first encounter with “Purple Kush” and “Mowie Wowie”. Today’s musical hit from the band, THE DEN COLLECTIVE makes a point of calling out some of today’s more notorious smoke. The hit “Mary Jane, I’ve Smoked my Last One” happily strums it’s way into my heart. The Den Collective is a five member band from the UK that easily slips between electric and acoustic sounds. Today on our Music Stash, we introduce the singer-songwriter duo of MOLLY AND SONNY BOY and their wonderful song “Relax your Mind”. Not just a great song for a Wednesday, but good advice to boot! They live in New Ulm, Minnesota and their quirky, entertaining style has them well known in their local community. Molly is a radio announcer at 860am KNUJ. Most of thier music is uplifting and most of it is laced with comedy. When not making beautiful music together, they can be found hitting the road on their Harley. Today on the stash, I have a bit of Electronica for all you techno fans. Like many good trip-hop artists, BEN BASE has created an entire world just for his music. Listing his home planet as “Zorg” and having survived an intergalactic war that destroyed said planet, Ben Base now lives in San Francisco making fierce drum beat rhythms and living as a super-hero. Although light on lyrics, today’s musical hit “I smoke herbs” has a great beat, a smooth rhythm and some nice horns. Too bad Zorg was destroyed, seems like a nice place to produce music. Welcome stashers! We are going to the Netherlands for today’s musical hit. Windmills, Rembrandt, tulips, cheese and laws that decriminalize smoking herb, why wouldn’t we want to go there? The band BASELESS is comprised of Jeroen van Bommel on vocals and guitar, Gimon de Graaf on drums, Kiko Nikolov, a Bulgarian guitarist and Marcos Leite, a Brazilian bass player. This mix of influences equals a warm sound, catchy lyrics and Pearl Jam-like riffs. Today’s hit, “Mary Jane” defines the band’s sound and equals a great tune for today’s audio stash. Hip-hop, trip-hop, psychedelic, what-ever you call todays music it will groove you to your soul and have you humming the lyrics all weekend. With a killer bass line, funky lyrics and a bit of electronica, the Tentacles have me convinced that I do, in fact, have a ganja computer. Well-known in the underground New York music scene, members Sam Crees and Peter Teraberry are artists in every sense of the word. Today on the Stash we look to a singer-songwriter for our midweek hit. I found the perfect guy-with-a-guitar kind of music. MARK GOTHARD has a unique voice like other greats of this genre, (think Tom Waits, Neil Young), his guitar style is engaging and warm, and like all good folkster artists he has something to say. Today’s track “If Thomas Jefferson Were Here” is a reflection on the state of our government. In our struggle to end prohibition we can get inspiration from the Jefferson quote “The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government”. So early in the week and already I need a vacation! Follow me to a place in the sun with Artist SLY JOE. Take a musical jaunt to sunny places like So Cal and New Mexico, and even a skip through Hawaii with this upbeat, just-what-we- need-on-a-Tuesday, melody. The musical hit today, “High” fills me up like a fresh squeezed lemonade at a dusty summer festival. How could any song that features a ukelele and a kazoo not give you a lift? Even though Sly Joe, who lives in Neenah, Wisconsin, is probably scraping the ice off his windshield today, he has me dreaming of enjoying some Pakalolo with my peeps on Makena beach. Aloha!
It’s Friday here on the stash, so take this musical puff from a UK punk rock group that was together from 1995 to 2002. The group P.A.I.N (which stands for Propaganga and Information Network) recorded the song “Grow More Weed” in 2001 with none other than Mr. Nice himself, Howard Marks, who joins lead vocalist Jon Eris on this heavy-dub reggae, ska-influenced tune. Mr. Marks famously spent seven years in an American prison for drug trafficking and later ran for election to UK Parliament on the single issue of the legalize cannabis campaign. He didn’t make Parliament, but he continues to write and campaign vigorously for the legalization of recreational and medical cannabis.
