Karli Duran, deputy director of San Antonio NORML

Big thanks to Karli Duran and all the people at San Antonio NORML who worked so hard to put together the 4/20 Fweedom Fest.  I knew it was going to be a good time when I get to the hotel and they have me booked in Room #420.  My good friend Chief Greenbud was in Room #421 across the hall.

So we couldn’t resist the opportunity to perform Chief Greenbud’s “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” at 4:20 on 4/20 in Room #420!

Chunky's Burgers in San Antonio, home of the Four Horsemen Burger

After that we headed out to Chunky’s Burgers, which had been featured on the Travel Channel series “Man vs. Food”.  Its signature dish is the “Four Horsemen Burger”.  The burger itself is one of those monstrosities that is the diameter of a 45rpm record (kids: Google it) and the four horsemen are the jalapeño, serrano, habanero, and naga jolokia (ghost peppers) on the burgers.  You sign a waiver and if you can eat the burger, you get your picture on the wall.  I’m smart enough to know better, but while we were there some college kid wasn’t and ended up vomiting after a few bites and his face melting.

Me & Chief Greenbud with the San Antonio NORML 4/20 Smart Car

Then it was time to head out to the Fweedom Fest.  The event was held at the basement of the Revolution Room, this enormous bar complex with four different lounges upstairs as well.  Though “revolution” may be an ironic name for a place that wouldn’t even let us go out to the dark parking lot to smoke weed… on 4/20!  Professor Bluntston rightly called it “some bullshit” after he and Dean Shwag had made the 2 hour drive to come visit.

Really? Room 420? On 4/20?

I got my time to speak, although I was introduced by the comedian / emcee as “Rick Russ”.  Hmm.  First, “Radical” Rick, now Rick Russ.  Maybe I have an evil twin named Rick somewhere.  The sad part of my trip is that I failed to pack the power cord for the big, powerful laptop and had to stream everything on the little netbook, so the frame rate is not good at all.

But the highlight of my trip to San Antonio has to be singing harmony vocals for Chief Greenbud’s acoustic set.  His third album is ready for release, so check out ChiefGreenbud.com for the latest info.

We begin from my room at the San Antonio Marriott, which is, believe it or not, Room #420.  Chief Greenbud (Room #421) will join us beginning at 4pm Eastern to kick off our coverage of 4/20.  He’ll be performing “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” from Room #420 on 4/20 at 4:20pm!

Then we pack up to head to San Antonio NORML’s Fweedom Fest, where Chief and I will be performing, as well as The Effinays and other great local artists.

Unfortunately, my plan to Skype call out to each time zone on 4:20pm is not going to happen.  The genius who packed my mobile studio failed to include the power supply for the production laptop, so everything today is running on the mini-netbook (apologies if that degrades the broadcast quality).  I’d fire him… if he weren’t me!

Mexican drug gangs recruiting teens along the border http://stash.norml.org/mexican-drug-gangs-recruiting-teens-along-the-border http://stash.norml.org/mexican-drug-gangs-recruiting-teens-along-the-border#comments Mon, 07 Dec 2009 22:20:20 +0000 "Radical" Russ Belville http://stash.norml.org/?p=13669

BROWNSVILLE (My San Antonio) — The Texas Department of Public Safety last month warned parents of Mexican gang recruitment and the Border Patrol is continuing a “scare and awe” campaign highlighting the risks, including torture and death, of cartel employment that seems to promise street status and easy money.

Laredo police have caught youths as young as 13 in cars full of marijuana still wet from the riverbank, he said, and the geography of the city is obvious enough to know where marijuana in that amount is coming from.

Customs and Border Protection officers in El Paso last March stopped eight juvenile drug smugglers, five of them U.S. citizens, with a total of 388 pounds of marijuana and 4.8 pounds of cocaine, prompting a news release warning that “traffickers will employ any and all types of people in their drug smuggling attempts.”

Since there’s no youth offender program in the federal courts, a 16-year-old caught trying to bring 200 pounds of marijuana over an international bridge will likely wind up in the state’s juvenile system, among thousands of cases heard each year by his county’s state district judges. Most records will be sealed.

Hey, young teen, likely black or Latino, has your mother or father been laid off recently?  Do you need some money to help your family pay the bills in this economic downturn?  If you’re lucky, maybe you can get a job at a fast food joint paying minimum wage.  Maybe you can get some backbreaking field work.  Or maybe you can “move a little product” and make twenty times the money doing one-fifth of the work of either of those jobs.

What do you think the border teen is going to choose?  It’s a win-win for everyone involved; the teenager makes big quick money and keeps the bills paid for the family, the drug gangs get cheap labor to do the job that has the highest arrest risk and lowest correctional expense.

You know who doesn’t hire American teenagers to transport and sell their products?  Beer, wine, and liquor manufacturers.

Two San Antonio women die from Fentanyl patches http://stash.norml.org/two-san-antonio-women-die-from-fentanyl-patches http://stash.norml.org/two-san-antonio-women-die-from-fentanyl-patches#comments Tue, 30 Jun 2009 17:20:24 +0000 "Radical" Russ Belville http://stash.norml.org/?p=9875

(WOAI.com) SAN ANTONIO — Controversy is brewing over a patch used for pain relief. At least two people in San Antonio have died after using the Fentanyl patch, and their families are blaming what they say is a defect.

Like most medicinal patches, Fentanyl is used by peeling off a sticky side and placing it against the skin of a patient. The patch is left on the skin for up to 72 hours and is supposed to provide the exact amount of medication needed.

However, the families of two San Antonio women who died say the patch they were prescribed to relieve their pain ended up killing them.

According to lawsuits filed by family members, both women suffered chronic pain. So, their doctors suggested Fentanyl patches.

Fentanyl is stronger than morphine. When it is applied to the skin, it then delivers a certain amount of Fentanyl into the patient.

While wearing the patches, Donna Singleton and Ellen Burks died. Their families say both suffered an overdose of Fentanyl because the patches were defective.

Similar patches have been recalled before because a cut along the side of the patch allowed too much Fentanyl to leak and cause a possible overdose.

Wait a minute, didn’t the Food & Drug Administration approve the use of these Fentanyl patches?  Why, doesn’t that mean it’s safe?  We know for sure that the FDA wouldn’t let people stick a patch on their body loaded with a Schedule II drug if it weren’t safe, even if this Fentanyl is just one isomer short of being Schedule I “China White” heroin.

We know this because they protect us from that evil Schedule I medical marijuana that never killed anybody in 5,000 years.
