Oaksterdam’s enrollment began falling as some California cities seemed oversaturated with cannabis businesses. The number of students dropped sharply last fall when U.S. attorneys began sending seizure notices to dispensary landlords and threatening cultivators. The prosecutors claimed California’s marijuana industry – supposedly nonprofit – had been “hijacked by profiteers” operating in violation of both state and federal law.

The federal assault on medical marijuana dispensaries is heating up in Colorado and re-igniting in long embattled Los Angeles, California as well. The letter from the US Attorneys office said the dispensaries had only 45 days to close or they would face criminal prosecution along with having their assets seized under drug forfeiture laws. Letters were also sent to the property owners where the dispensaries were located, a tactic that has been very effective in the closure of many Californian dispensaries.

A federal Judge today threw out Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer’s case against her own state’s medical marijuana law, a law that was approved by the voters. Governor Brewer filed the complaint in May to seek a judgement from the feds on whether they would prosecute state employees with drug crimes for administering the states new medial marijuana program. Brewer and the State Attorney General, Tom Horne says they were reacting to a letter from the former Arizona US attorney who made the suggestion.

When originally asked as a candidate his stand on the issue of medical marijuana, President Obama had pledged not to be “using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on this issue”.
Today, four US Attorneys from the Obama Administration’s Department of Justice announced plans to “outline actions targeting the sale, distribution and cultivation of marijuana.”
