Previously, I have been the host of my own political talk radio show on satellite radio. I've been the High Times "Freedom Fighter of the Month" and I travel across the country to educate people on marijuana reform. You don’t need to explain yourself… I think any intelligent person could see where your article was going with it. I recently tried dabs for the first time and I can see how from someone on the outside looking in it could look like smoking heroin… The fact of the matter is people are going to view it this way whether we like it or not. All it’s going to take is a few bad cases of panic attack type overdoses and the media/Feds have something to use against the medical marajuana community. Don’t fall into the same trap our parents did in the 60′s.

I was making some BHO on my balcony one night. This wasn’t the first time I had conducted this experiment.
I was on a couch confined in the corner of my balc. I had the extractor and butane and stove in the corner as well. At the end of my experiment all of a sudden I see myself in a fucking fireball. The fucker exploded. Lol. Yes funny now, but at the time, it was a nightmare. I think being in the corner didn’t give enough room for the butane permeate and it cought heat from the stove. Suffered burns his thankful it wasn’t my face. Don’t fuck around with this shit do it in the rift environment!!! Unless u love singed chin hairs and eyelashes and legs! Be careful my fellow 420 friendly fellows

    1. you are right
    2. you shouldn’t have published this without finding a solution first
    3. the solution is in writing a lot of articles on the benefits of bho vs flowers
    4. the solution is in finding better, safer solvents than butane
    5. the solution is in making a fail safe bho kit and selling it
    6. the solution is in making better ways of smoking it, which looks better as well
    7. the solution is making a label for safely produced dab, with an anonymous lab ID
    8. the solution is in reducing price levels
    9. the solution is in creating a stoner led organization that certifies labs
    10. the solution is in testing dabs, like with canna test

or…. the solution would be that we all switch to full melt dry sift… :-)

Over 20 years ago I s introduced to dabs and it was was processed and purged in front of me while I waited to take my first hit. I was told back then by the person who made it it was something that should be done only in a well ventalated area like a garage or outdoors. It was something that should not be done around children doto the fact that butain has warnings posted on the labels. At the same time the person who made itband used it for medical reasons also stated it should not be done more than 1 hit per week. I perfer my flowers or my cold water hash due to the safty warning on the butane canister. What I find bothersome is how many people I watch doing dabs in closed envirments with no air circulation, they never take into consideration pets or other people when the lite up that butane torch. I also notice that the people I watch doing dabs seem to domore and more as the days progress compared to what I use using flowers or my cold water. I think someone should start some clincle trials to prove the safety behind dabs v/s flowers or cold water hash.

Schizophrenia is extremely rare… and I have never seen a study linking THC to it. Please show your findings, James. Facts are extremely important in cases like this and a lot of people don’t have them.

I have been a budtender/manager/general manager of two dispensaries in the greater Bay Area and have done my own research and observations of the effects of dabbing while working service at our dab bars. It’s an interesting way to approach marijuana inhalation and it’s quite effective. I have dabbed and understand why it is favored among medical patients. In the long run – it’s cheaper. Dispensaries carry oil from $30 to $50 a gram and a gram can be rationed out into 25 reasonable “hits”, making each use ridiculously cheap compared to using a gram of flowers – which can last a sitting to get the same desirable effect.

However there are multiple drawbacks to dabbing instead of inhaling flowers. First, your tolerance skyrockets. Oil ranges from 40% to 90+% THC and the more you dab the higher your tolerance so the more you have to dab again. It turns into an unfortunately vicious cycle I saw mildly in flower use. This being said, I’ve met people who claimed to have to inhale an eighth of an ounce of oil a day to even feel anything. If you’ve ever taken too much THC you know what the “flatline” headache feels like. I would like to assume that the people taking too much THC at once will soon be experiencing headaches and increasing irritability.

Onto the next negative, butane is a gas. It’s a petroleum and if you’ve ever been to a gas station and read the sign “inhaling vapor fumes can be hazardous or fatal”? From Wikipedia: Inhalation of butane can cause euphoria, drowsiness, narcosis, asphyxia, cardiac arrhythmia, temporary memory loss and frostbite, which can result in death from asphyxiation and ventricular fibrillation. Butane is the most commonly misused volatile substance in the UK, and was the cause of 52% of “solvent related” deaths in 2000. By spraying butane directly into the throat, the jet of fluid can cool rapidly to ?20 °C by expansion, causing prolonged laryngospasm. “Sudden sniffer’s death” syndrome, first described by Bass in 1970, is the most common single cause of “solvent related” death, resulting in 55% of known fatal cases.” While they are talking directly about butane, this also applies to BHO. As much as you can try to purify and purge it, it will always still contain impurities. Also, high amounts of THC can lead to some psychological problems ranging from schizophrenia to dementia and severe short-term memory loss.

Just a nutshell of my findings.

With this discussion it’s easy to make the error of saying your line should be everyone else’s line. I have stopped smoking and medicate with whole bud edibles. My reasoning is that any process introduces potential for contamination. But you can also extend “process’ to growing which can also introduce harmful substances into cannabis flower. So there is always a level of trusting that your retailer / grower is testing for contaminants regularly.

Thank goodness that some order has been restored to the wild wild West. The real future is in growing one’s own plants. The truth is that retail medicine will always have the much more overhead than an individual grower, which limits the quality of the end product. Time is money. And there are some very good quality medicine providers, but it’s hard to find ones that take the time to finish all steps of the process consistently.

There is less comprehension of the subject matter in this comments thread than there would be if you told a room full of hipsters you liked pop music. It’s not an attack on cannabis in any form; it’s an explanation of exactly how bad this oil stuff looks to the non-smoking world, and how planting the wrong image of cannabis users in the public mind can cause major problems with regard to legalisation campaigning.

  9. Dan

This concentrate is the shit! That shit is wax! Yo….lol 8-)

  10. Javier

This thread is probably old by now. i stumbled upon it researching to further my glass art, I love to dab, i do it every day. i live in california, and i havent run into BHO in a very long time. All of the wax ive recieved for the past two years is 100% icewax untouched by any pollutants, its hard to believe that this could be an issue.

  11. Tony Delights

Its ridiculous everyone saying BHO is not healthy. It is more healthy. All you are smoking is the THC and CBD’s and a few other chemicals that are already in the plant. Your just stripping away ALL plant matter. Your taking to much which is why it hurts. Leftover butane? RIDICULOUS. What do you think is in the lighters you use to light a bowl. Your inhaling that butane. There is NONE left in properly made oil and your never going to blow yourself up even being halfway responsible. You smoke a bowl you smoke all the plant matter and butane from the lighter. You heat a piece of glass up with a torch and drop some nice clean oil on it and your done after one hit. Get a clue and get off oil users.

I cant believe this is from NORML. So disappointing.

  12. Lauren

Thanks for writing on this topic, Russ. Prohibition and criminalization of mmj is outrageous to me. But this oil is going to hurt the movement. Everything from the concentration, to the production, the method of smoking, the price, and the punk kids using blowtorches on their bongs. It’s not something we should take lightly.

  13. Rose

Thank you for highlighting the danger in flaunting easy-to-target mmj usage. It is all the dabbed up stoners here that are hurting the movement most. It would be much easier to fight this insane war on drugs if our disorganized “united voice” didn’t sound like a 30 yr old dude with paranoia living in his parents basement and using a damn torch to light his bong.

I’m not harshing on mmj in any form, so please dab it up. Just be responsible patients and help the movement by representing mmj well, not like your some huffing teenagers.

BHO is often made irresponsibly. I live in Pot Central. A Major Corner of the Emerald Triangle, and I see people smoking impure BHO all the time. Hurts my lungs, and I am quite a seasoned-head. Until I see the process more standard, and healthier, I am not going near it. My Ice And Water processed Jelly Hash is maybe a couple percentage points lower in THC value, but it doesn;t feel like it takes hours off my life every
time I take a hit. And is quite strong enough for anyone I know.
And Guess what Folks… I know quite a few people who are addicted to BHO<————… Don;t Kid yourselves. It's Gnarly.

  16. guerrila steve

I dont think Russ is making any unreasonable comments here. Dabbing is just a method of consumption and is in some ways healthier despite it’s similarity to harder drugs. BUT truth is that BHO wax is not safe, and even if it is almost pure a concentrate will have trace amounts of BHO that may not be immediatly toxic but for everyday, long term use would be dangerous. There are plenty of other ways to extract thc like CO2 and hyperbarrich…both make dabbable wax and you could take orally as well. As for being overly potent, you can always dab less! potency is not the enemy, if someone is going to get too high than they will do it whether they smoke bowls or dab so really it just allows you to use less. But the burden of self control is on you! you have to limit your tolerence. Dabbing is great for those who need intense releif of symptons, but if you have a high tolerence you should try swithching to high CBD strains for a while, and taking tinctures instead of just increasing your dose of thc. BOTTOM LINE: pretty much the less you use any one method of consumption the more effective it is, ao the more variety the better.

  17. Gen. Manager of SF Collective

I didn’t have my first dab until this past january and ever since I’ve been dabbing every day. Before that I only smoked hash on occasion and oil was a luxury. Once I had a dab I immediately switched and not only did it save money but it also did the trick on a lot less. I’m an advocate of dabbing, 100%. It has no carcinogens, and it’s vaporizing. AND it saves money. I spent $500 on flowers a month to $120 on wax.

However, I do believe that dabbing in excess can lead to possible negative side effects. Now, this isn’t biased in any way shape or form this is just based upon research I have done and the own effects I have experienced.

First off, the production is hazardous unless you are in a safe environment with the right equipment. Secondly, even tho it may be purged well you are still inhaling a fume that was once petroleum based. If you’ve ever read the warning signs at gas stations they read “inhaling petroleum fumes will cause cancer”. Third, the optimal vaporizing point for THC is 385 degrees. Anything beyond that the THC starts to break down into another chemical. We heat nails to 1000 – 3000 degrees. We literally incinerate our concentrates.

The molecular structure of any substance changes at a heat that high, so we aren’t even dabbing THC at that point.

Now this being said I dab all the time. I’ve lost my short term and long term memory and I can’t seem to get myselt to quit because I don’t know what I’m addicted to. Is it t the wax, the rush or the actual THC? It’s one of the three.

I leave my research and observations there.

  18. Greg

BHO and other concentrates take a plant in it’s natural state, and use sometimes solvents are used to extract the psychoactive resins by various methods. Whatever method is used, you are now looking at concentrations several times possible from the whole plant.

Once you take a whole plant and modify by extracting the active ingredients and consuming them in a concentrated form, you are on a much different path. That’s why people can chew coca leaves with lime and get a pleasant pick me up to help work at high altitude.

But you take the same coca leaves and extract the cocaine with volatile solvents and you end up with with a drug epidemic in America.

I appreciate that some industry insiders are speaking up, because it is an industry in its infancy stage, and usually that means it has to regulate itself. Should anyone be selling 80 THC? There’s really no need for that.

Greg ur a crackhead my 20,000 dolled bho only hitman torch tube looks nothing like a cack or meth pipe and when I use it in no way feels like chasing the dragon. Also people who need more thc aren’t druggies if they were they would do like you say and move on to harder drugs. Some of us are not as lucky as you to be able to smoke just to relax. Most of us are patients and need this as a real pain relif. Because we choose not to be druggies and eat up all the bullshit drugs the docs are passin out like candy. I’d also like to state ur a fucking doche.

  24. Greg

Sorry guys but dabbing is really some crackhead shit. I’ve been smoking for over half my life, 15 years now all over the world as I’ve lived in Europe, Canada and throughout the West Coast of the US. I can hang with the best of them when it comes to the sweet herb or some good Indian or Moroccan hash, but the use of a torch and a crack-pipe looking device turn me off completely, not to mention it fucks you up way too much. If that’s what you’re looking for then I think you need to turn to harder drugs and forget the THC. If 23% thc bud doesn’t satisfy you then you’re a druggie really looking for a rush, sorry but it’s the truth. Rolling and smoking a spliff is a whole routine that relaxes one and puts you at peace; heating a Ti nail is much closer to chasing the dragon or freebasing, plus the butane’s not natural so you’re smoking chemicals. CRACKHEAD SHIT!

  25. Brock

BHO is great when made properly your just hating cause you get bad shit….

  26. Cole

I medicate with a propane torch, on a Kind Creations oil can perc bubbler with an adjustable titanium nail and Silika globe. I feel no medicinal effects from flowers and iso based oils can be pretty damn gross. I tell you about my set up to convey that money is no issue when it comes to getting the most out of your medicine. I smoke exclusively bho in honey comb form and buy it black market by the ounce to keep it affordable (bout $8 a gram) my product is a brownish gold which is not in a liquid form whatsoever. A propane torch costs about $10 at my local Fred Meyer and I have used the same one at least 15 times a day for the last two months without needing a new one yet or a refill. On top of that, they also heat the nail up much quicker. I can see what you claim to have been getting at, but if that claim is true, this is simply a poor example of your writing. It’s one thing point out what our opponents might say, but without suggesting your own ideas to counter the media nightmare it sure seems like you’re not doing much good for the Dab Squad. My point is the bho I smoke is a closer comparison to a graham cracker than heroin, and anyone who pays $60 for a vector torch, they need to constantly refill with $7 vector butane, should be kicking themselves all the way to the store to buy a propane torch.

there is a danger with dabs. but I don’t think I would compare it to meth cooks crackheads heroin addicts. I use to make this stuff 5 years ago in my pre vaporizer days and the problem with it is it’s not being cleaned properly. after you blow out all of this beautiful yellow goo with butane put it in a crock pot in distilled water and boil it 4 at least 12 hours. as a matter of fact when you blow it out you can blow it out underwater into the crock pot outdoors. avoiding the fumes. after boiling for about 12 hours in the distilled water you will find the water has turned a greenish white and stinks, stinks like butane. now let it cool and throw the water out. the oil will stick to the side after cooling in you won’t lose any. you’re pretty yellow dabs will look like good old fashioned oil. not as pretty but clean. no days I just use my vaporizer I’m quite happy with that.

  33. Ty Palmer

Russ, I take your words as a call for responsible action by responsible people. Because goodness knows there is no putting cats back in bags once patients understand the efficiencies achieved in utilizing just a little concentrated cannabis. I feel you on the torch and the media. It is over the top. But the truth is the American people will have quite a lot to swallow from the oncoming wave of new behavior that will come from regulating and taxing cannabis adults to use for wellness outside a relationship with a doctor. Terrence McKenna said as much. Thanks for provoking the thoughts, Russ!

come to think of this olde oil stuff from back in the late 60s and early 70s, we just called all oil,, “hash oil” or cannabis oil…

where did this B-H-O crap come from,, and DABS??? please, call it what it is.

I personally see half of the battle is show-offs that just have to have some half-slang-not-real words for regular olde fashioned stuff. They have to use some off the wall intricate devise when something simple and discrete will work fine…

I may not be 100% on , but I know this has some effect on public perception.

Make it simple and olde fashioned and people will accept it.
Sit up straight and explain what it does to help you,, in plain and understandable English.

When the public sees a laid back stoner talkin Dabbs,,, what…… lets have some wide awake real talk, What is the medical and-or recreational sales pitch you would use to sell cannabis oil from your booth at the state or worlds fair.

  38. dbeall

well, lets see,, there must be a different substance that could be used in place of butane..

or, maybe a better, easier or safer =dummy-proof way to get the oil collected.

and,, maybe a nicer pipe from which to smoke it from, i remember a nice test tube set up that always worked nice and clean. I thought it was more than presentable to the general public,, more so than som bongs I have seen.

does the whole BHO thing just need a fresh make over?

You’ve still got my vote for ‘Most-Sensible, -Rational and All-Round-Positive Voice’ for a cannabis legalisation spokesperson, Mr. Belville: of course you’re right – couldn’t agree more with every point you make in the ‘Kush’ article.

Furthermore, I’d add that in opening this Pandora’s Box for the prohibitionists, the ‘Not-Your-Father’s-Woodstock’ may be the first Jack to pop up, but it will shortly be followed by a ‘Gateway Theory’ Jill. I can hear it already: ‘They start with leafy pot and move on to more powerful skunk, but ultimately it’s all just a slippery slope downhill to hash and resin and oil, and before your know it they’re risking life and limb to distil the dangerous moonshine they’ve become addicted to.’ Jack and Jill will get together in the dark, damp corners of fear boxes in prohibitionists’ minds and spawn lots of ugly little ideas like these. Of course you were right to do whatever you could to propagate some damage control.

In fact, in view of the obvious danger some of the ostentatious showing off evident in your ‘Kush’ article illustrates (Any English person who’s spent any time in America yet continues to call people ‘mate’, for example, is obviously begging for attention.) I believe you demonstrated great restraint. Personally, I’m afraid I’d find it difficult to be so diplomatic. Let’s hope the more sensible and clever take the hint and learn to keep their mouths shut. The problem, as always, is those who aren’t very bright or sensible.

  40. Furreall

I can see how your words were misread and misinterpreted. I have spent almost a decade convincing my ex-toking parents that my medical usage (though still not legal in my state) is warranted. Now if I were to sit in front of them and go through the process of making and using BHO they would most certainly look at me and wonder what form of medication requires you to (in the eyes of the uninitiated) cook up your medicine and partake in it in such a fashion. To not step outside of the haze for a minute and imagine what it looks like to the uneducated, then to presume it doesn’t matter, is surely the first step to being taken by surprise when the world finds a new misconception to grab onto. When there is still a debate over the use of Ti pads and the potential health risk (within areas of OUR culture), should we not be expecting THEM to be infinitely more skeptical? Thanks for trying to cover our asses from our perspective, and theirs (prohibitionist). You can’t forget the oppositions perspective, otherwise you are just allowing oneself to live in self-imposed ignorance as is the case with many of them, evidenced by their opinion of our lifestyle/medicine/culture. We can do better and be better than that, it is the only way to win the fight. Lets beat them not join them. Thanks Russ….

PS…for all the medical state people and west coasties, consider that their is more understanding in your states in regards to BHO than in any other part of the country ( and they still can’t cover the subject accurately or appropriately). Now when you look outside the guilded cage (thanks Neil Peart, DOH! ) you will realize that things innately aren’t going to be understood, Russ was simply asking folks to consider that….not all perspectives were created equal, and what are we gonna do about it. Cry because one of our own pointed out the fear we will inevitably see in ones not of OUR perspective? I hope that isn’t all we can use this insight for.

    Russ,

I understand that you think your playing devils advocate here. But it just seems a bit silly. I mean we have concentrated forms of legal drugs such as alcohol. You can light it on fire and burn your self, is this “like meth” I mean, seriously, BHO is just a form of hash which has been around for ever. I just question what the point of writing these things is? Are you trying to convince people not to use BHO, because thats not going to happen, its great! , So the only possible consequence is planting ideas in the prohibitionist playbook.

Welcome back Russ, I liked your article, and I too am surprised that the fear media isn’t going crazy with talking about those items. First let me say thank you for all that you do to help Norml in it’s goal of pro cannabis. Second it sucks that people are only reading the words that they want and not understanding the meaning of the article. Third the optimism in me is hoping that as it becomes ever more and more clear where the public opinion lays on the cannabis issue perhaps the main stream media is slowly changing, what they cover.

I’m surprised we haven’t heard more from our “scare the shit outa ya” media yet. Yeah, this is perfect for our opposition to use on the sheeple. Somehow we need to shape it using wording like “concentrated cannaboids” or extra strength medicine. Still, no body dies nor does anyone get injured or harmed even in extreme overtokes while thousand still kill themselfs on legal substances. This is the message we have to hammer home along with the human and monitary costs of prohibition. It’s too bad that Russ had to take heat for just trying to warn the community that BHO will be the next “OBL” of the weed wars so we need to be ready.
