Derek Copp update via celebstoner.com (Chris Goldstein contributor)
Details are starting to trickle in as Derek starts to recover from the shooting that ripped through his right lung and liver and broke two ribs.
Police knocked on Copp’s sliding glass door on the ground floor of the Campus View Apartments and Townhouses at 10255 42nd Ave. in Allendale at approximately 9 pm on Mar. 11. When he opened the door, police beamed a flashlight at him. As Copp raised his hand to shield his eyes, the unnamed officer fired one shot, hitting him in the upper right chest. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s detective who fired has been placed on paid leave.
Copp’s parents are particularly pissed that they had to learn about the shooting from a nurse at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital at 3 am on Mar. 12, about six hours after the incident, rather then from the police.
The 20-year old native of Spring Arbor and graduate of Jackson Community College supported Prop 1, Michigan’s medical-marijuana initiative which passed with 63% of the vote in November.
Imagine having to learn that your son had been shot in a botched law enforcement action by a nurse 6 HOURS after the shooting. I suppose that in the police eyes Derek Copp is just some “left wing hippie peace-keeping liberal” (as Derek describes himself), and his parents don’t deserve the courtesy of informing them they just shot their son.
A small but defiant group of 25 protesters were outside the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department today holding signs that said “Shooting? Why?” and “Justify THIS shooting”
A march is scheduled at 1pm on Friday in Grand Rapids
And finally the Copp family has retained a Grand Rapids Attorney, Fred Dilley.

Is Derek Copp suing WEMET? If so I’d gladly testify against them. Those bastards busted down mt hotel door, came in with their guns drawn for a warrant for my wife for driving on an expired license. They took $1500 dollars to pay for the door. They also stole $7000 from me. So if anyone knows if Mr. Copp is going to fight those F*kers let me know I’ll join the fight.
[...] ever recorded of Americans who support cannabis law reforms, a Michigan college student like Derek Copp can still be ‘chillin’ at home, when, the next thing one knows there is a knock at the door, [...]
p.s., this was not the GRPD, it was the Ottawa County Sheriff’ Department working with the West Michigan Enforcement team.
We will assemble on Friday at the GVSU Pew campus in GR around 12:30, and march soon after 1. Join us and fight for your rights, our movement is growing
The appropriate procedure here is a personal law suit against the officer. He is liabale for all damages and can have all of his assets seiezed. An example needs to be made out of this wreckless nazi pig that shot an innocent student. To the parents of Derek, plenty of people would be willing to contribute to your legal fees to carry out the suit.
I clutch my bong a little tighter now…..
Its incidents like this that remind us exactly what were all fighting for. That could have been any one of us! We must Stop this from continuing to happen. America was once a Free country.
Prayers and thoughts for this kid to pull through and sue the shit out of the local boys in Grand Rapids. This case has me ……very
